The Harry Potter author took aim at the Prime Minister

JK Rowling has launched a blistering attack on Keir Starmer following his decision to bring Harriet Harman on board as his Adviser on Women and Girls.

The Harry Potter author took to X to mock the Prime Minister's choice, sarcastically congratulating him for selecting someone whose understanding of womanhood she fundamentally disputes.

"Bravo, @Keir_Starmer, for getting in an Adviser on Women and Girls who thinks the definition of women and girls includes men and boys," Ms Rowling wrote.

The bestselling novelist suggested the appointment would do little to reconnect Labour with voters who have grown disillusioned with the party.

She accused Labour of appealing only to "smug, lanyard-wearing, luxury-belief-espousing cultural elitists" rather than ordinary people.

Mr Starmer had announced the appointment on X, declaring himself "delighted" to bring Ms Harman into the role.

The Prime Minister praised the veteran Labour politician as "a strong advocate for women and girls" who would help create greater opportunities for women in public life.

"I'm committed to tackling structural misogyny that is a barrier for too many women and girls," Mr Starmer stated.

He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Ms Harman on what he described as "this important issue."

The appointment comes as part of Mr Starmer's broader efforts to address gender inequality, though it has clearly reignited tensions with gender-critical voices who have long been at odds with Labour's position on transgender rights.

Ms Rowling bolstered her criticism by referencing remarks Ms Harman made over two decades ago regarding the definition of womanhood.

"As far as I'm concerned, women are women who are born women, but women are also women who are trans women," Ms Harman said in 2002.

The author seized upon this statement as evidence that Ms Harman's views on gender are incompatible with effectively advocating for biological women and girls.

Ms Rowling has been a prominent voice in debates surrounding transgender rights and women's spaces, frequently clashing with those who support a more inclusive definition of womanhood.

Her intervention suggests she believes Labour remains fundamentally disconnected from voters who share her gender-critical perspective, viewing the Ms Harman appointment as further proof of this divide.

Ms Rowling concluded her critique with a pointed statement about the fundamental challenge facing those who seek to protect women's rights.

"You cannot defend what you're afraid to define," she declared.

Ms Rowling has repeatedly argued that blurring the boundaries of womanhood undermines efforts to address sex-based discrimination and protect female-only provisions.

Her latest intervention demonstrates that the debate over how to define women and girls remains a flashpoint in British political discourse, with no resolution in sight.
