A number of celebrities joined King Charles III and Queen Camilla at a banquet at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday.

Hugh Grant, Mick Jagger and a number of other celebrities have come under fire from members of the general public.

A select few stars attended a lavish bash held at the Palace of Versailles as French president Emmanuel Macron held a banquet in honour of King Charles III and Queen Camilla's state visit.

Macron named the King and Queen as guests of honour at the event after the royal pair had to postpone their initial visit due to nationwide rioting.

Jagger and Grant were just two of the A-list names on the guest list alongside the King and Queen, with other stars such as Sex Education's Emma Mackey and actor Charlotte Gainsbourg also in attendance.

In the days since the banquet took place, images and videos from inside have circulated online to give royal fans a taste of what the King, Queen, and their guests were treated to.

However, the scenes of expensive china, slick tuxedos, and servants on hand for the stars have prompted a number of disgruntled social media users to blast the hypocrisy of the celebs who participated.

Reacting to a 47-second clip of the event online, one user sarcastically replied: "Hugh Grant. Life-Long socialist and champion of the working classes."

While a second also put Grant in the firing line: "I wonder how long famously Labour voting Hugh Grant needed to wrestle with his conscience, before rushing to accept an invitation from the King at Versailles??"

Elsewhere, a third also mocked the actor's seeming hypocrisy: "Hahaha Hugh Grant - man of the people," followed by a series of laughing emojis.

And another weighed in: "Absolutely stunning, beautiful dressed up & I have no problem with that but look at those people who are hypocrisy & overprivileged like Hugh Grant how they treats us to them.

"'One rule for them, one rule for us' through covid, lockdowns, climate change, Brexit, immigration etc."

And a fifth commented: "Hugh Grant the ultimate woke warrior for the people..."

While a sixth echoed: "That's hilarious, seeing Hugh Grant there.

"He's managed to paint himself as some kinda hard-left, in touch with the people, socialist Twitter guerilla, which many of the hoi-polloi fell for."

The King and Queen's state visit to France is one that's been packed full of talking points and historic moments.

King Charles made history when he became the first UK monarch to speak in the upper house of the French Parliament on Thursday, speaking in both English and French.

While Macron was accused of breaking royal protocol with the King as he welcomed him to Paris on the opening day of the state visit.
