The actress took on the role of Septa Unella in the award-winning HBO drama

Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham has recalled a harrowing experience on the set of HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones which left her with a long-lasting ailment.

Before her Emmy-winning stint on Apple's feel-good footballing series, Waddingham shot to global stardom on the George RR Martin fantasy series as stern opposition to Lena Headey's Cersei Lannister.

Fans of GOT will remember all too well how Cersei got her comeuppance on Waddingham's Unella during the sixth season of the drama.

And in true Game of Thrones fashion, the punishment Cersei enacted on Waddingham's alter-ego wasn't exactly lenient.

Chatting to US talk show host Stephen Colbert earlier this week, Waddingham recalled one such punishment scene which involved Unella being waterboarded - and revealed she too bore the brunt of the harsh scenes.

"There weren't stunts, but Thrones gave me something that I wasn't expecting from it and that was chronic claustrophobia," Waddingham began to explain.

She continued: "I spent 10 hours - I mean I've talked about it since with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the two exec producers on it, I was like, 'Good job it’s for them', because it was horrific... [I had] 10 hours of being actually waterboarded, like actually waterboarded."

Colbert was clearly unconvinced as he questioned whether the Hollywood star really would've been put through such torment but she doubled down.

She went on: "The reason why I don’t believe (the show) is touched yet in terms of the cinematography of it for a series, it’s just a different level. But with that comes actual waterboarding.

"So I'm strapped to a table with all these leather straps and I couldn't lift up my head because they said that was going to be too obvious that it's loose and I was like, 'Right, I'd quite like them to be loose'.

"I'm on my way back and I'm in this fancy-pants lift and my hair's already bleached to death (but) I have grape juice all in my hair so it went purple, I couldn't speak because the Mountain had his hand over his mouth while I was screaming and I had strap marks all over me like I'd been attacked...

"The lift doors open and one of the other guys who's been filming something else is like, 'What happened to you?'

"I told him everything and he went, 'You're lucky, I've just been crawling on my elbows in s**t for four days'. But it kind of doesn't matter on Thrones."

The tale drew laughter from Colbert's audience before Waddingham went on to provide details about her upcoming role in the big-screen blockbuster The Fall Guy opposite Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.

Waddingham has cemented herself as one of Britain's best-loved stars in recent years and left fans "in tears" back in February when she performed at this year's Baftas.

The actor was also praised when she acted as one of the hosts for last year's Eurovision Song Contest.
