David Harbour has broken his silence regarding his former wife Lily Allen's divorce-inspired record West End Girl, describing the experience as "weird" and questioning its accuracy.

Speaking to Variety in an interview published yesterday, the 51-year-old Stranger Things actor addressed the album for the first time since its release eight months ago.

"I don't think I could say it's all true," Mr Harbour stated.

The actor acknowledged finding the situation uncomfortable but expressed understanding for Ms Allen's creative process.

"It was weird. I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that," he told the publication.

His comments mark the first time he has publicly discussed the record that sparked widespread speculation about their marriage.

Mr Harbour made clear that while he respects Ms Allen's artistic output, the 14-track album does not represent his version of events.

"Stories are complex, and that's why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn't my experience," he explained.

The actor declined to address specific claims made in the record, citing his commitment to keeping his personal life private.

"I can't really say that much more because it's my private life," he told Variety. "In spite of the fact that a lot of people don't allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won't speak about that."

West End Girl arrived in October 2025, with Ms Allen having written the entire record in just ten days following the couple's separation in December 2024.

The album explores themes including infidelity, open relationships and gaslighting, with listeners widely interpreting its lyrics as a detailed account of the marriage's collapse.

Ms Allen has consistently described the work as "autofiction," maintaining that the songs were "inspired by what went on" but with artistic licence applied.

She has also called it a "mixture of fact and fiction," cautioning fans against treating the lyrics as "gospel."

The 41-year-old singer previously insisted the record was never intended as revenge, telling Interview magazine: "It's not a cruel album. I don't feel like I'm being mean. It was just the feelings I was processing at the time."

The record proved a significant commercial and critical triumph for Ms Allen, becoming her highest-charting album since 2014 and earning praise from critics, fans and fellow musicians alike.

In November, Ms Allen revealed to CBS Mornings that creating such a personal work felt "completely and utterly liberating," describing the writing process as "an act of desperation" during which she was uncertain whether the songs would ever be released publicly.

"I felt like I couldn't really get on with my life until I'd said it," she explained.

Ms Allen has already performed the album in its entirety at smaller venues and at the Mighty Hoopla festival earlier this year.

Next week, she will embark on her first headlining UK arena tour in support of West End Girl.
