The TV star has defended Just Stop Oil's antics

Environmentalist and TV personality Chris Packham has called for the House of Commons to be “covered” in solar panels in a bid to improve energy efficiency in London.

The Springwatch star, who has defended Just Stop Oil’s eco zealotry, told GB News that Britain has “no choice” but to introduce more wind and solar energy harvesting measures.

Moves have been made towards making Britain are more energy efficient place from the Government, such as plans for the Isle of Wight’s largest solar farm, which is now set for approval.

Packham believes the Government should not slow down in its net zero drive, and flat buildings across the capital city should be explored as a potential further means for solar introduction.

“We soon begin to accept changes in our landscape, and this is a time we have to change.

“We have to change our minds and practices, if we don’t, we don’t have a future.

“When it comes to solar, what about the roof of the House of Commons? We could cover it with solar panels.

“That would be a lovely stunt, wouldn’t it? Putting solar in the right place, putting wind in the right place, it is the right thing to do.

“We have got no choice but to do it.”

It comes after the naturalist said the “inconvenience” of traffic jam disruption should be put into perspective after two Just Stop Oil activists were convicted of causing a public nuisance for scaling the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge in October.

Judges said the jail terms of Morgan Trowland, 40 and Marcus Decker, 34 were “not excessive”.

Packham told the BBC that the sentences - three years and two years and seven months respectively - were wrong.

"This does seem to be a particularly onerous and vindictive punishment and we see far lesser sentences handed out to crimes that most people would think would be far more dangerous”, he said.

"Just Stop Oil don't hurt people. They are scattering paint and litter and so on but there are no human victims of that.”

The TV host said people in the Just Stop Oil movement were “terrified” at the climate crisis, and called on the public to keep things in perspective.

"Our temperature has now got to the point where our planet is boiling”, he said.

"People are losing their lives, they're losing their livelihoods all over the world and the inconvenience faced in a traffic jam, albeit significant if you do miss those funerals, we need to keep a perspective between that and what's going on in other parts of the world and what is likely to be going on here very, very soon.”
