Britney Spears is understood to have been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The former pop star, 44, was charged in California on Thursday with a single count of misdemeanor DIU, TMZ reports.
The former singer faces arraignment on May 4 following the charge brought by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

According to sheriff's office records, the performer was taken into custody at approximately 3am on Wednesday before being released several hours later.
Police concluded their investigation into the matter and submitted their findings to prosecutors on March 23.
Emergency services received a 911 call describing the singer's black BMW 2026 convertible travelling erratically, with the caller reporting the vehicle was braking unpredictably, weaving between lanes and operating without a functioning taillight.

Audio from the emergency dispatch call was later obtained by US Weekly, revealing the extent of concern from witnesses who reported her driving behaviour.
A spokesperson for Ms Spears described her actions as "completely inexcusable" in a statement issued at the time of the arrest.
The representative expressed optimism that the incident could mark "the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life."
The statement continued: "Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Ms Spears has since taken steps to address her situation, voluntarily entering a substance abuse treatment programme more than a month after the March arrest, according to her representative.
The decision to seek professional help came before prosecutors formally brought charges against the former chart-topping artist.
