The Yorkshire Shepherdess opened up about how she feels when fans complain about her appearance

Our Yorkshire Farm star Amanda Owen has firmly responded to critics who have made "cruel swipes" about her appearance as a shepherdess.

The 46-year-old television personality has defended her choice to wear makeup whilst working on the farm, challenging stereotypes about how farmers should look.

Owen appeared on Wednesday's episode of ITV's Lorraine, where viewers were given a glimpse into her daily life managing Ravenseat Farm in Yorkshire.

During the segment, she addressed the criticism she has received for maintaining her appearance whilst working in an environment typically associated with more rugged looks.

In the footage, Owen was captured applying lipstick whilst sitting in a farming vehicle, demonstrating her refusal to conform to expectations.

"I like my makeup. I like to try and make an effort, and I know that sounds very vain," she admitted during the programme.

The shepherdess then delivered a defiant message to her critics: "But if anyone wants to say 'aw, you know you've got some mascara on you can't be a shepherd' - tough, because I am."

She emphasised her passion for her work, adding: "I take great joy and happiness in what I do, so I keep doing that."

Despite getting fully involved with caring for animals and land, she maintains that taking pride in her appearance doesn't diminish her farming credentials.

Owen has consistently challenged the notion that being a shepherdess means abandoning personal care or style, positioning herself as someone breaking stereotypes in the farming community.

This isn't the first time Owen has addressed such criticism, as in 2021, she tackled the topic on Steph's Packed Lunch.

Then host Steph McGovern commented: "Throughout it all, you stay so glamorous. Which, always, I'm amazed about."

Owen responded by showing her hands, saying: "Look at my hands, though, Steph. Honestly, I've got iodine up my arm."

She further challenged assumptions about her profession, adding: "Yes, we don't like stereotypes. I think that's the thing - you know.

"I mean, yes, I've got a sheepdog, yes, I've got a crook. Yes, I spend my time running around after sheep, but I can do other things too."

Owen’s eldest son, Rueben Owen, was recently subject to backlash from their fans on Instagram after some claimed he was mistreating a sheep in a video his mother posted.

However, he recently shut down the fact that he lets the comments get to him and said in an interview with The Telegraph: "I don’t have the time or the inclination to scroll through social media."

The young farmer added: "If you do ever see me on my phone, I’ll be searching for machinery sales."
