Renowned Israeli performer Alon Aboutboul has died aged 60 after suffering a collapse at Habonim Beach near Haifa on Tuesday morning.

The actor had been swimming when he began experiencing difficulties upon leaving the water.


Emergency medical teams from Magen David Adom arrived at the scene and attempted extensive resuscitation procedures.

Despite their prolonged efforts, paramedics were unable to revive him and declared him deceased at the beach.

Eyewitnesses indicated that Aboutboul seemed to be in distress immediately after emerging from the sea.

He was initially conscious when brought ashore, but his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his collapse on the sand.

Aboutboul's journey in the performing arts commenced at age 15 when he joined the prestigious Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts. Born in Kiryat Ata in May 1965 to parents of Algerian and Egyptian heritage, he discovered his calling early.

His breakthrough arrived during military duty with the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. A supporting part in Two Fingers from Sidon garnered him the Best Actor prize at the Jerusalem Film Festival, launching a career that would span over four decades.

The versatile performer accumulated more than 100 screen and television credits throughout his career. His theatrical achievements included portraying Hamlet at the Habima Theater, demonstrating his range beyond film work.

Aboutboul achieved significant recognition in major Hollywood productions, featuring in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, Steven Spielberg's Munich, and Ridley Scott's Body of Lies.

His television appearances included prominent American series such as Homeland, NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order: SVU and Snowfall.

The actor frequently portrayed intelligence operatives, military personnel and criminal figures in international productions. His filmography also encompassed London Has Fallen, Rambo III and Every Time We Say Goodbye.

In 2022, Aboutboul performed in the London theatrical production of The Band's Visit.

His domestic accolades included the Ophir Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2003 for Nina's Tragedies and the Israeli Television Academy Award for his performance in Sabbaths and Holidays.

Culture and Sport Minister Miki Zohar paid tribute to the late actor, stating: "I was deeply pained to hear of his sudden death.

"Last night I watched an interview with him, where he talked about filming a movie he recently participated in, and the passion for the profession that radiated from him was evident even after so many years in the field."

Zohar added: "Alon was an Ophir Award and Television Academy Award winner and over the years portrayed a wide range of characters to which he brought depth and emotion, leaving a deep mark on Israeli culture. May his memory be blessed."

Aboutboul leaves behind four children from his relationship with Shir Bilia. At the time of his passing, he was developing "Jacob's Dream", a film project he planned to co-write, co-direct and star in.
