Thunderstorm warnings has been issued for the weekend

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to batter the UK this weekend, with the Met Office warning Britons of "significant" flooding.

Britons have been urged to check travel routes this morning as major downpours are expected.


Following large spells of sunshine, rain is forecasted to hit sections of the UK all week with amber weather warnings imposed for thunderstorms across the south east coast.

The whole of London and parts of Cambridge are also impacted.

An amber weather warning has been imposed for all of London

The alert has been in force since 4am this morning and will end at 11am.

The Met Office warned: "Torrential rain, with thunderstorms in places, could lead to some significant surface water flooding during Saturday morning."

Britons have been warned of road flooding and should be prepared for train and bus delays or cancellations.

Motorists have been urged to take care as "difficult" driving conditions are predicted too.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

An accident has already been reported this morning on the M4 in London, with delays for drivers around Heathrow.

National Highways advised drivers to take caution this weekend and frequently check traffic conditions.

Power cuts could be triggered as thunderstorms batter the UK, with Britons being warned homes and businesses could be flooded "quickly".

The Met Office added: "Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life."

Chief Met Office meteorologist Andy Page said: "Intense rainfall will impact parts of the UK as thunderstorms move in from France.

"This weekend is expected to be busy on the roads as more schools in England and Wales break up for the summer holidays, so it's important people keep up to date with the very latest forecast.

"There will be spells of more pleasant weather in parts of the UK through the weekend, with some sunny spells in between systems as they move through."

The Environment Agency has currently issued 30 flood alerts where disruption is possible.
