UK weather: Cold and windy with heavy wintry showers today

Today:

Rain, heavy in places, with risk of some sleet, across southern areas clearing during the morning, then all parts cold and windy with sunny intervals and squally wintry showers. Some heavy snow showers and isolated thunderstorms in the north.

Tonight:

Wintry showers becoming more isolated later in the night as winds ease. Clear spells developing allowing a frost and some icy patches in places.

Friday:

A few showers around, but most places dry by afternoon with sunny periods and much lighter winds. Cloud and rain for the northwest later.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Cold start for England and Wales, but a lot dry weather here. Windier, with spells of rain at times across the northwest. Rain probably pushes southeast Monday, heavy in places.
