Weather warnings have been issued across the UK, including an amber warning in Scotland

A man has died in a weather-related incident after Storm Amy sent 80mph winds battering through Ireland.

The man, who was aged in his 40s, was involved in an incident in Letterkenny in County Donegal.

Ireland, similarly to the UK, is facing widespread disruption as a result of Storm Amy.

More than 234,000 properties have been left without power as a result of the turbulent conditions.

Storm Amy has also brought localised flooding, fallen trees, transport disruption and school closures.

Residents across County Donegal had been advised to shelter in place between 4pm and 6pm today.

A red wind warning meant the Ulster county was facing fallen trees, damage to power lines, dangerous travelling conditions, structural damage and wave overtopping.

Irish police reported that there had been an incident which saw a man sustain serious injuries in Letterkenny shortly after 4.15pm.

An Garda Siochana later said he had died and his body was removed to the morgue at Letterkenny University Hospital

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in due course.

Irish households have also been facing a loss of power as a result of Storm Amy.

The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) said affected properties were predominantly in counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan and Donegal.

A spokesman added: “Crews will continue the restoration work for as long as possible this evening, but it is likely that the majority of customers will not have their power restored tonight due to the hazardous weather conditions and accessibility challenges.”

Meanwhile, schools across Northern Ireland were advised to close early as the high winds brought disruption.

NIE Networks had already warned there had been a “significant level of damage to the electricity networks” in the region, with 50,000 properties left without power.

Alex Houston, NIE Networks operations manager, said: “Our incident management centre in Craigavon has been opened as have our local incident centres across Northern Ireland with staff across the company being escalated to assist with the response effort.
