Extreme heat alerts have been issued as the 'holiday hell' heatwave rages on

Britons flying to Spain for their summer holidays are facing a major heatwave that has seen temperatures in Europe hit 45C (113F).

The "holiday hell" heatwave has been dubbed Cerberus - a mythical multi-headed dog often referred to as the hound of Hades.

On Monday, record temperatures hit 45C in the Spanish village of Loja near Granada.

European countries have taken precautions to tackle heat, which forecasters are warning could be even worse next week.

Greece has restricted the working hours of horses and donkeys while officials have blocked people from accessing nature reserves, in a bid to prevent wildfires.

Air conditioned spaces have also been opened up to give people shelter.

In Italy, extreme heat alerts have been issued due to the severe risks the heatwave poses to vulnerable people.

More than 100 weather stations registered temperatures of at least 35C (95F) as early as 6am on Wednesday, according to meteorologist Ruben del Campo, of Spain's national weather agency.

"On Wednesday we expect temperatures to fall overall with the arrival of cool winds from the north and east, with the exception of the south-east and southern Andalusia, where hot winds blowing from the interior will cause temperatures to soar," he said.

British tourists across the Mediterranean have been warned of the life-threatening effects of the sweltering heat.

Land temperatures - how hot the ground is to touch - reached 60C in parts of southern Spain on Thursday.

The European Space Agency warn next week could break continental records.

The Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily are set to see more unbearable temperatures, with the BBC claiming temperatures could reach 48.8C.

"We are facing an unbearable heatwave," Italian politician Nicola Fratoianni said.

"Dying from the heat is unthinkable - we should be taking measures to avoid tragedies like this in the hottest hours of the day."

Italian authorities have now urged people not to drink alcohol or travel unnecessarily to reduce risk.
