As well as the whole of Wales and the West Midlands, the Met Office’s amber warning will stretch across Nottingham and Leicester in the East Midlands to Gloucestershire in South West England and South and West Yorkshire.
80-100 mph gusts of wind are also possible across parts of Cornwall and the Channel Islands, prompting another amber warning.
The Met Office has warned those in affected areas to prepare for major delays to travel.
In more serious cases, some rural communities may be cut off because of the heavy snow drifts.

They also added power cuts were likely and that other services, such as mobile phone coverage, could be hit.
Explaining the approaching whiteout, the meteorologists observed: “Rain associated with Storm Goretti will turn readily to heavy snow on Thursday evening, initially on hills and then to lower levels overnight, before easing through the course of Friday morning.
“Accumulations of 10-15 cm are likely fairly widespread, with the potential for 20-30 cm in some locations, mainly on hills above 200 m elevation, more especially in Wales and/or the Peak District.
“Snow will ease through the course of Friday morning, turning more to rain or sleet at times at low levels, but disruption is likely to persist into Friday after snow stops falling.

For those communities that may be cut off by the storm, several additional measures must be taken to prevent any additional dangers.
In any standard areas, homeowners are encouraged to keep the thermostat set to the same temperature, both during the day and at night.
Electrical heaters should be turned off and fires put out before going to bed to avoid fire risks.
Frozen pipes can also be prevented by opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate through the plumbing.
