Six travel hacks will help you to get the most out of your holiday

Travelling needs change with age, and what you enjoy - or look for in a holiday - can vary with each decade.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert shared six tips to make travelling easier and more enjoyable for mature holidaymakers.

Isheeta Borkar, who is the owner and author of Travelicious Couple with her husband, shared advice for over-50s.

Based on her own experience travelling with her parents, Isheeta told GB News slower travel trends can make for a more relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Holidaymakers should schedule time to do nothing during their trip

Choose relaxation over rush

It can be tempting to pack in as much as possible when abroad, but darting between cities and even countries can take its toll. Isheeta said: "Fast travel is just exhausting. Airports, transfers, dragging luggage across cobblestones, it gets old fast. These days, we pick fewer places and stay longer.

"There's something so comforting about knowing where the local bakery is, or which bench catches the morning sun. You start feeling less like a tourist and more like you belong, even if just for a week or two."

Add 'do nothing' days

Take this one step further by scheduling time with no plans so you can fully relax on your holiday. The expert commented: "This might be the most underrated tip. After a long flight or a busy city, we plan a day with zero agenda.

"Sleep in. Wander around. Read in a café. It resets everything. Travel gets a lot nicer when you stop feeling like you have to see everything."

Choose comfort over cheap deals

Getting a genuine bargain is great, but it's not always what it seems. The travel expert suggested cheap prices are not worth it if it means sacrificing your comfort. She said: "We used to squeeze into tiny budget rooms to save a few bucks.

"Now? I’ll pay a bit more for a lift, good pillows, and a place where I can boil water without crawling under a bunk bed. Especially in Europe - some of those 'charming' old buildings are basically vertical obstacle courses."

Keep your tech up-to-date

Organisation is key for a more relaxing trip, Isheeta explained. She said: "If you’re on any medication, keep digital copies of your prescriptions in your email or cloud. Also, grab a travel eSIM before flying.

"Being able to message your Airbnb host or look up a café without hunting for WiFi makes a big difference. I’m not glued to my phone, but I don’t like feeling stranded either."

Pack efficiently

You don't need to take your entire wardrobe on your next trip, but you should do your research and pack efficiently for the weather and activities you have planned.

The travel pro stated: "Packing light sounds great until you forget your walking shoes or end up layering five T-shirts on a chilly evening in Florence (true story). I’ve learned to pack for the weather we’ll probably get, not the one I’m daydreaming about. Also, don’t be the person with five 'just in case' jackets."

Don’t skip travel insurance

This is important for everyone, but especially for mature adults. Make sure the policy you take out covers everything, including any health conditions.

Isheeta said: "It’s boring. I know. But after watching someone in their 50s get evacuated off a trek in Peru, insurance suddenly didn’t seem like a checkbox anymore. Spend the extra £10 or whatever it is. Peace of mind is worth more."
