Holidaymakers and backpackers have been issued new safety advice

Britons visiting a popular South American tourist spot have been issued fresh travel advice.

In an update from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), travellers were told to avoid central La Paz as a large political protest continues to cause "widespread disruption" in the Bolivian capital.

The FCDO warning, issued on Friday but still current today, cautioned that the demonstration could cause a significant impact over "several days".

Officials specifically advised Britons to avoid the centre of the city near Plaza Murillo and the area of Sopocachi near Plaza Avaroa.

Travellers were also instructed to steer clear of Government buildings throughout the city.

"Do not go near protests or roadblocks," the advisory stated, highlighting the potential dangers in these areas.

The FCDO warning emphasised the potential for "violence" as the situation develops.

Officials also cautioned that the protest "will hinder transport around the city", which could affect holidaymakers' travel plans.

Over the weekend, supporters of former President Evo Morales gathered outside the electoral court and demanded his reinstatement as a presidential candidate.

Clashes between protestors and police erupted, with tear gas and paintballs used to disperse crowds.

In light of the protest, Britons visiting the nation should stay up-to-date with the FCDO's latest travel advice and local guidance.

Bolivia is a popular tourist destination described by South America Travel as boasting "endless beauty and charm".

It is famous for sites such as Lake Titicaca, colourful lagoons such as Laguna Verde and Laguna Colorada, the Amazon rainforest, Noel Kempff National Park, and the largest salt flat in the world, Salar De Uyuni.

Bolivia is listed as a predominantly "green" country, but the FCDO does advise against travel to one key area: the Chapare Region of Cochabamba Department.

Before visiting the South American destination, it's important to be aware of the FCDO's latest travel guidance.

This will include the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health, and getting help.
