Fresh travel advice impacts those who are going swimming in a bucket list destination

British holidaymakers heading to Barbados have been urged to take extra caution when swimming.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned that currents can be "deceptively strong", including on popular beaches along the south and west coasts of the island.

Officials highlighted that safety provisions on the Caribbean island are limited, with some beaches having no lifeguards or warning flags at all.

"Existing lifeguard stations are not manned 24 hours a day," the advisory added, meaning swimmers could find themselves without professional supervision even at beaches that typically have lifeguard coverage.

Visitors to Barbados should also be aware of motorised water sports equipment operating close to shore.

The FCDO warned that jet skis, dive boats on snorkelling tours, and catamarans may operate near the shore.

Swimmers were advised to remain vigilant not only of these vessels but also "other swimmers who may use non-motorised, large water equipment like surfboards".

The east coast of Barbados presents particular dangers, with the FCDO explicitly stating that "swimming is not recommended on many of the east-coast beaches where currents are particularly strong".

Tourists were advised to "follow local warnings" regarding these areas. For comprehensive guidance on staying safe in the water, the FCDO directed holidaymakers to consult the Royal Life Saving Society's water safety on holiday guidance.

Barbados is widely considered a bucket list holiday destination. It is known for its exceptional beauty, from white sandy beaches to Harrison's Cave to Andromeda Botanic Gardens.

Water enthusiasts can enjoy adventures such as surfing, snorkelling and submarine tours, while animal lovers can witness green monkeys and more at Barbados Wildlife Reserve.

But before visiting the enchanting destination, it's important to be aware of the FCDO's latest travel guidance.
