The nation is no stranger to inflicting travel chaos on its European neighbours

A major airline has warned Britons that delays to a number of flights could be possible due to ongoing strike action in France.

Jet2 made the announcement ahead of several days of proposed action by Air Traffic Control staff which could impact travel across French airspace.

Warning passengers about the possible delays, Jet2 said on its website: "We just want to let you know that strike action, supported by French Air Traffic Control on May 13, 2025, may cause flight delays to French Airport or through French airspace.

"Rest assured, we'll try to keep any disruption to a minimum. Check-in will close 40 minutes before your scheduled departure so please arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure."

The airline urged passengers to check their website for the latest updates, and at least 12 hours ahead of travel for the latest flight information.

Those flying should arrive at the airport around two hours before the plane is due to take off.

Air traffic control strikes in France are fairly frequent and has previously triggered major travel chaos across the continent.

In fact, the upcoming strike has followed a series of delays and flight cancellations across Europe at the end of April as the French government continues to be unable to arrange a deal with the traffic control workers.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

One of the worst-affected times for travel across Europe came just a few months before the Paris Olympics kicked off last summer.

Ahead of the action, Ryanair announced that it would have to axe 300 flights from the UK to Spain and Italy, refreshing pressure on top EU bosses to urge France to get a grip on the impact from the strikes.

The airline's chief executive Michael O'Leary said: "French air traffic controllers are free to go on strike, that's their right, but we should be cancelling French flights, not flights leaving Ireland, going to Italy, or flights from Germany to Spain or Scandinavia to Portugal."

One of the largest French air traffic controllers unions SNCTA announced it was cancelling the strike on April 25 after coming to an arrangement over working conditions.

However, the continental disruption persisted since wider discussions had not yet been completed.

Industry group Airlines for Europe confirmed that around 16,000 flights were cancelled and 85,000 were delayed in 2023 due to the same reason.
