Visiting bucket list destinations can be expensive, but many lesser-known places can offer beauty with a smaller price tag and fewer tourists

Everyone has one - or many - holiday destinations on their bucket list, but booking a dream holiday is not always accessible.

However, a travel expert has rounded up 10 alternatives that should not be missed if you want a similar experience without the hefty price tag, whether you are travelling to Europe, Asia or Africa.

Fred Harrington from SaveMyCent said: “The rise of destination dupes reflects a wider trend among travellers; more and more often, we’re seeing more people prioritise value per experience when choosing where to go. Swapping big-name destinations for lesser-known alternatives can cut travel costs by 30 to 50 per cent, particularly on accommodation and meals, so it’s really a no-brainer.

"Plus, you’ll usually experience a much more authentic version of local life, without heavy tourist crowds. I’d recommend checking regional airports, as you can sometimes find direct routes to these dupe locations, especially for European destinations.

"For example, flights from the UK to places like Albania or Kraków are increasingly available through budget carriers. Planning around off-peak travel dates and booking accommodation in local guesthouses rather than international chains can also make a huge difference to your final bill.”

While all the bucket list countries and cities mentioned are worth visiting, these alternatives are great to visit while you save and prepare for a bigger trip. Fred listed his top 10 swaps to save money while exploring new destinations.

Swap the Maldives for The Philippines

The South Asian country tops the bucket list of many Britons, but the beautiful views come with a five-star price tag. The travel expert suggested islands like Palawan and Siargao have jaw-dropping scenery and tranquil retreats, offering luxury at the price of a mid-range hotel room in the Maldives.

Swap Thailand for Vietnam

Thailand is popular and prices can be reasonable - especially once you are there - but booking flights and visiting particularly touristy places can see the costs shoot up. Fred said: "If you're drawn to Thailand’s beaches, temples, and night markets, Vietnam offers a similar Southeast Asian experience for even more affordable prices."

Swap Bali for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has beaches and temples that should not be missed, but at a lower cost. The travel pro recommended surf towns like Arugam Bay and jungle escapes in Ella for worthwhile budget options.

Swap Turkey for Albania

Turkey has grown in popularity in recent years and, as a result, it is not as cheap as it once was. While it is beautiful, Albania can offer similar experiences. Consider underrated gems like the turquoise waters of the Albanian Riviera and the charm of Berat and Gjirokastër.

“In fact, Albania is rapidly gaining traction as one of Europe’s best-value beach destinations,” Fred added.

Swap Greece for Bulgaria

Pick a spot on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria for dramatic sea views without the high prices of Santorini or Mykonos. Sunny Beach and Sozopol are comparable to the Greek islands, offering a great nightlife for a fraction of the cost, the expert explained.

Swap Paris for Budapest

Fred said: “The Hungarian capital city offers affordable hotels and much cheaper (but still amazing) wine." If visiting Paris for romantic architecture, riverside walks and sophisticated cafés, expect to find this in Budapest.

Swap Australia for South Africa

Both of these holiday spots are sure to be on many Britons' bucket lists, but South Africa may be the cheaper option, Fred said. And it doesn't require spending as long on a plane. Both places have a surprisingly similar appeal, with diverse landscapes, wildlife, coastal road trips and even seaside scenery.

Swap Amsterdam for Kraków

Kraków in Poland is often underrated, yet it is a great place to visit for charm, culture and a fun nightlife - "a bonus for your budget is that Polish beer is cheaper, too".

Swap Spain for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Spain is an incredible option for your getaway this year and, while there are plenty of deals to be had, Bosnia & Herzegovina can offer similarly warm hospitality, rich history and scenic views at a much lower cost than the more popular parts of Spain. Fred suggested visiting Sarajevo’s Ottoman or hiking through the waterfalls of Kravica - all for wallet-friendly experiences.

Swap Mexico for Guatemala

Mexico is one of the best places to visit for vibrant streets, ancient ruins and top-notch street food. Guatemala is also great for Mayan ruins and experiencing new culture, just be careful where you go as not all parts are safe to travel to.
