Consider lesser-known destinations to save money this year

With summer drawing nearer, many people will be booking a well-earned getaway, and there are lots of countries worth visiting this year.

If hoping to get the best deal on your holiday, a travel insider suggested three ways you can lower the cost of your trip.

The best way to get a good deal is to be flexible, according to senior product strategy manager at loveholidays, Katie Ellis.

Being open to different destinations and dates - even being prepared to dart off last minute - can get you the best deal when travelling this year.

Be open to new destinations

While Spain, Italy and Portugal are often the first picks for sun-seeking Britons, being open to other tourist destinations could ensure your holiday is enjoyable, while economical.

The expert said: "Being open to visiting different destinations can help you to save money when booking a family break, with the added benefit of helping you to explore new places.

"Using online search and comparison tools is a helpful way to pick where you go on holiday based on your budget."

She explained that Tunisia in North Africa has grown in popularity this year, with loveholidays seeing an increase of 65 per cent for family bookings. The destination is lesser-known, but praised for its "affordability and accessibility". Bulgaria is also one to consider for a beach trip.

Katie added: "Tunisia offers a short flight time from UK airports, which makes travelling with little ones less stressful. On arrival, holidaymakers will find plenty of family-friendly resorts, paired with balmy weather, soft sandy beaches and a variety of child-friendly activities ready and waiting.

"Meanwhile, Black Sea resorts Sunny Beach and Golden Sands in Bulgaria offer soft sandy beaches, gentle shallow waters and plenty of affordable all-inclusive options. Many resorts come with kids’ clubs, water parks and family-friendly entertainment, meaning parents can kick back and relax knowing there’s plenty to keep the little ones occupied."

Be flexible with dates

The summer is undoubtedly the most popular time to go on holiday, but this means it can be the most expensive. Avoiding school holidays will help you get a better deal, but the expert shared the most affordable time periods for those who are planning to travel with children.

Katie continued: "While families are often bound to travelling during peak periods, being flexible on when you travel within those times can help to stretch your budget further.

"For families without school-aged children, loveholidays’ data reveals that the week commencing June 23 is currently the cheapest time to travel on a short-haul beach holiday during summer, coming in at £88 per person per night on average based on a seven-night stay.

"For those travelling during the school holidays, departures during the week commencing August 11 are the cheapest, coming in at £105pp per night on average, based on a seven-night, short-haul beach holiday."

Look out for last-minute deals

Similarly, a last-minute getaway could come with discounts. Although it is nice to book in advance and have something to look forward to, the flexibility of a late booking can bring up impressive deals.

The travel insider said: "If you’re worried that booking last minute will result in a hefty price tag, this isn’t always the case. Travel companies continue to offer plenty of discounted deals for those looking to jet off soon after booking.

"The reason lies in how the travel industry manages supply and demand. Holiday companies often offer discounted rates closer to departure if they haven’t been able to fill seats or hotel rooms in order to fill unsold spaces.

"At loveholidays, we work with our hotel suppliers to agree discounted rates on any last-minute availability, helping you to get the lowest prices possible. Keep an eye on the hotels and destinations offering the best last-minute deals at any given moment on our website."
