Britons are looking for rural escapes in the UK

British holiday habits are shifting in 2026, with new research showing rising living costs are reshaping where people choose to travel.

According to new data, affordability is one of the most important considerations, with many Britons opting for closer-to-home getaways over far-flung adventures.

The Holiday Desires Report from Away Resorts, based on responses from 3,000 UK adults, found that the average annual holiday budget sits at ÂŁ2,664, or ÂŁ222 per month.

While it sounds like a lot of money, the report highlighted this figure is still less than two months of the UK’s average mortgage repayments, which stood at £1,592 per month in January 2026.

For many holidaymakers, that means trips abroad are no longer a spontaneous luxury, but a carefully budgeted expense.

Unsurprisingly, cost was found to be the joint most important factor when planning a trip, with 81 per cent of respondents ranking it as a top priority.

UK staycations are now slightly more popular than trips abroad, with 46 per cent of Britons looking for a budget break close to home, compared to 45 per cent opting for international travel.

Coastal and countryside escapes are leading the way, with over half of travellers drawn to beach holidays and 34 per cent opting for rural retreats. Holiday parks and UK-based accommodation are also becoming more popular, offering affordable ways to enjoy time away without the added expense of flights.

Head of trading at Away Resorts, Rosie Bown, said: “Of course, financial planning can be one of the most stressful aspects of organising a holiday, especially when the goal is to relax and disconnect.

"The good news is that quality, affordable and equally enjoyable holidays don’t have to mean long-haul flights or eye-watering price tags.

"Exploring the UK offers all the benefits of a holiday abroad, stunning landscapes, diverse local culture and the all-important downtime, without the financial strain, proving that sometimes the best escapes are closer to home than we think”.
