Six Scottish lochs are worth considering for your next holiday

Scotland's Loch Lomond has been named as Britain's most photographed lake, making it the perfect place to enjoy a scenic UK break.

It attracted 672,500 posts across Instagram and TikTok, according to new research that analysed social media data to find the nation's most scenic lakes ahead of the summer season.


The 22-mile stretch of water in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park generated 629,000 Instagram posts and 43,500 TikTok videos, according to data from GO Outdoors.

This placed it significantly ahead of Loch Ness, which secured second position with 585,700 combined posts, whilst Cumbria's Derwentwater claimed third place with 192,706 social media mentions.

Britain's largest lake by surface area, Loch Lomond is encircled by hills that provide photographers with dramatic backdrops. Adventurous visitors often scale nearby Ben Lomond for elevated perspectives of the landscape.

The legendary Loch Ness, renowned for its mythical monster that forms a cornerstone of Scottish folklore, attracted more than 500,000 social media posts. Urquhart Castle overlooks the water, with surrounding woodlands and hills enhancing its photogenic appeal.

Derwentwater has become a favourite amongst Lake District holidaymakers, offering numerous hiking trails and boat excursions. These activities provide ample photography opportunities, contributing to its nearly 200,000 posts on Instagram and TikTok combined.

Scottish lakes have secured an overwhelming majority in the rankings, claiming seven of the ten most scenic spots. This northern dominance spans multiple regions, from Argyll & Bute to the Highlands and Perth & Kinross.

England's representation comes exclusively from Cumbria's Lake District, with four entries making the top 10. Derwentwater was third, Windermere placed fourth with 167,755 social media posts and Wast Water and Coniston Water secured eighth and 10th positions respectively.

The data reveals a stark geographical divide in Britain's most photographed natural attractions, with Scotland's lochs generating substantially more social media engagement than their English counterparts.

The remaining lakes demonstrate Scotland's continued prominence, with Loch Fyne in Argyll & Bute attracting 66,025 posts, followed by Perth & Kinross's Loch Tay with 53,217 mentions. Loch Leven, straddling Perth & Kinross and Fife, garnered 52,818 posts.

Cumbria's Wast Water accumulated 51,647 social media posts, placing it amongst England's most photographed lakes. Scotland's Highland region contributed Loch Morlich with 49,223 posts, whilst Coniston Water in Cumbria rounded out the top ten with 41,253 combined Instagram and TikTok mentions.

The complete dataset encompassed more than 2.4 million social media posts, highlighting British lakes' enduring appeal to photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.
