Two days in July could be the best time to travel this year

Summer has arrived, and it is the perfect time to plan a UK trip, if not done already.

Many Britons may have noticed staycations have soared in cost, but it is still possible to grab a summer deal by booking during a "sweet spot" time period.

This is according to staycation experts and owner of White House Hideaway, Richard Edwards. He said: “Most people automatically think weekends or school holidays when planning a getaway.

"But if you can be flexible with your timing, there's a sweet spot in early July that offers everything you want from a summer break - better weather, lower prices, and peace and quiet.”

According to the travel pro, "early July is your secret weapon". In particular, book this year for a getaway on Tuesday, July 1 or Wednesday, July 2.

Richard explained the first two weeks of the month are a golden opportunity for a getaway, particularly because schools in England and Wales have not yet broken up. Midweek deals are also often far cheaper.

He said: "You're hitting that perfect sweet spot before the school holiday madness kicks in. Accommodation providers know this too - they're often happy to offer midweek discounts because demand traditionally drops between Monday and Thursday.

"Friday to Sunday sees the biggest surge in bookings for popular countryside and coastal spots, driving up prices and creating those frustrating 'fully-booked' scenarios."

While the UK weather is always unpredictable, the start of July is usually good. Richard said: “Early July generally gives you that Goldilocks weather - not too hot, not too changeable, just right for outdoor activities.

"Plus, you're well clear of those late August downpours that can catch people off guard." If the beginning of July doesn't work for you this year, fear not. The staycation expert has more tips to reduce the costs of your holiday.

Tips for the perfect midweek escape

1. Book Tuesday or Wednesday

Accommodation prices are usually lower for those who arrive midweek. Arriving on a Tuesday and staying for two or three days will often be cheaper than visiting for the same duration of the weekend.

2. Avoid the bank holiday trap

The bank holidays can be even more expensive than other weekends, so be mindful of booking for the summer bank holiday on Monday, August 25, 2025. Late August bookings will be more expensive and busier.

3. Think beyond the weekend mindset

While a weekend break is a great way to unwind at the end of a long week, shifting your mindset can give you more affordable options. Fully relax into your days off on a Tuesday to Thursday, and the experience will be just as good.

4. Book activities in advance

There are few crowds in early July compared to later in the month, which applies to activities, too. Booking these in advance will often save you extra cash.

5. Consider the commute

Getting to your destination is likely to be more pleasant, too. Roads and trains are quieter (and cheaper), and you'll miss the rush back to the cities on a Sunday.

6. Plan for longer stays

Extending a midweek stay to Thursday or Friday will allow you a longer break at a lower overall cost than a traditional weekend getaway.

The expert added: “The beauty of a well-timed staycation is that you return feeling genuinely refreshed rather than needing another holiday to recover from your holiday."

Prices will vary greatly depending on the time and location, so try to be flexible on these if you are looking to save. Richard concluded: “Timing really is everything when it comes to staycations, and most people overlook the hidden gems of midweek breaks.

"I've watched guests arrive on a Tuesday afternoon looking slightly sceptical about taking time off during the week, only to leave on Thursday morning saying it was the most relaxing break they've had in years.

“There's something special about having a beautiful location almost to yourself. When our guests visit during those quieter midweek periods, especially early July, they get to experience what these places are really like - the morning mist over the River Wye, genuine conversations with locals who aren't rushed off their feet. It's the difference between a quick escape and a proper reset.

“The Tuesday and Wednesday slots that everyone ignores are often when you'll find the best deals and the most authentic experiences. Restaurant tables are available, hiking trails are peaceful, and you can finally book that spa treatment you really want.”
