Doctors in Spain have proposed new rules regarding smoking - and Britons might find themselves affected

Britons heading to Spain this year need to be aware of new smoking regulations that have been recommended.

Tourists may have to adapt their habits as the holiday hotspot cracks down on smoking in public.

Medical experts have recommended that tourists shouldn't smoke in shared public spaces such as restaurant terraces, beaches and in queues. Establishments may put these recommendations into effect.

There is also a proposed ban on flavours being added to tobacco and nicotine delivery systems.

These measures may be hard to get used to as many like to enjoy a cigarette or vape with their meals.

It has also been stressed that in any healthcare centre with more than 10 doctors, one person should be responsible for combating smoking.

Healthcare centres with more than 30 doctors should have a specialised or exclusive smoking unit.

These measures were included in a document drawn up by the Spanish Medical Association, approved by its General Assembly and agreed with other health organisations.

The document provided 20 measures aimed at promoting smoking control and making progress in regulating it.

As part of the country's aim to limit smoking, the Ministry of Health in Spain announced that it was working on a Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention and Control of Smoking 2021-2025.

This will include promoting tax measures to raise the price of tobacco, as Spain's prices are currently low in Europe.

Making the move to raise prices could make smoking less accessible to young people.

In addition to smoking prevention measures, Spain has announced more recent changes that will affect Britons in the country.

Britons flying to specific airports in Spain may find that the process is easier and speedier in 2024, as three major airports announce a major change at security.

Popular supermarket Aldi is also expanding in Spain, with nearly 50 stores opening this year.

This is a big win for tourists holidaying in Spain, or for those deciding to move abroad.
