Some of the best weekends away can cost a lot less than you might expect, with lots of great getaways from as little as £150.
This is according to Monzo, who drew real-world spending data from over 4.8 million users to create a detailed picture of how Britons use their money abroad.
Based on this, it outlined how you can enjoy a brilliant European break without breaking the bank.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium and Slovakia top the list for ultra-affordable getaways, according to the research. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, travellers can explore Mostar’s Old Bridge and bustling Bazaar for free, get lost in Sarajevo’s historic Old Town, and even cool off at the stunning Kravica Waterfalls - all for just a few euros.
Belgium is a popular European getaway destination, offering beautiful cities like Bruges and Brussels where you can wander medieval streets, take canal-side walks, and visit the UNESCO-listed Grand Place, all without dipping too deep into your wallet.
Meanwhile, Slovakia delivers history and nature in equal measure. Bratislava’s Old Town and Castle Grounds cost nothing to explore, and nearby hiking in the High Tatras comes with postcard views and minimal expense.
Weekend escapes under £200
If your budget stretches slightly further, you have even more options. Think Portugal, Hungary and Montenegro.
In Lisbon, you can roam the Alfama district, browse quirky flea markets, and soak in panoramic views from city lookouts, all for free.
Budapest offers iconic sights like Heroes' Square, relaxing thermal baths under £8.50, and easy day trips to charming towns like Szentendre. Over in Montenegro, visitors rave about Kotor’s Old Town, Boka Bay’s fjord-like coastline, and scenic national parks.
Weekend breaks under £250
Britons with a budget of up to £250 could be strolling through Reykjavik, Barcelona, or Copenhagen. Iceland is not known for its low prices, but Monzo experts shared how a cheap break can be done in Reykjavik.
They recommended free street art tours, waterfront sculptures, and local geothermal pools like Vesturbæjarlaug. Spain remains the most visited country by Monzo customers, with over 2.5 million visits last year - and for good reason.
