A travel expert shares inspiration for your next city break

If you are looking to explore somewhere new but short on time, a European city break is a fantastic holiday idea.

And some of the continent's most popular summer destinations are also great for a winter escape, according to a travel pro.

Company director at eShores, Gavin Lapidus, has shared the parts of Malta and Italy that are ideal for a weekend break. He highlighted Valletta for a Malta getaway.

The Mediterranean capital city is steeped in history, and the 16th-century architecture provides a scenic backdrop for a cosy winter stroll.

Plus, it is only around three hours from London, with cheap flights available - just £28 for a return in January 2026, at the time of writing.

Lapidus said: "Valletta in Malta offers mild, pleasant weather in the winter months, perfect for a quick weekend getaway.

"Be sure to visit St. John's Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, followed by a stroll through the city’s streets whilst enjoying a pastizz, a traditional savoury pastry."

If that's not for you, Rome is a classic city break choice which is equally great in the winter months. Skip the hoards of crowds that can surround the main landmarks during the summer months for a more peaceful trip.

The travel expert explained: "Rome in Italy, which is usually a tourist hotspot in the summer, experiences much fewer crowds and milder weather in the winter months.

"You can enjoy major attractions such as the Vatican Museum and Trevi Fountain much more leisurely, and without the heat of the summer."

Both of these cities have fairly pleasant temperatures during the cold season, but the expert has shared more recommendations for those looking for more sun.

Lapidus suggested the Maldives and Thailand for an opulent getaway with guaranteed sunshine in the coming months.

He said: "Phuket, Thailand, is great to visit between November and February due to cooler temperatures (24°C to 31°C), lower humidity, and less rainfall."

Not only are there beautiful beaches, but Britons can immerse themselves in the culture - "be sure to visit Phuket Old Town to look at the historic architecture".

The Maldives is more expensive, but also a tempting option during British winter months. The expert explained: "The Maldives experiences its dry season from November to April, making the UK winter the ideal time to visit."
