The long weekend is a perfect opportunity to discover a new walking route in the British countryside

With Britons in many parts of the UK enjoying the early May bank holiday tomorrow, there has been an increase in online searches for the best walks to do.

Experts have rounded up the most popular places to visit based on this, with a walk in the South West taking the top spot.

The South West Coast Path has had the biggest increase in searches, meaning there could be plenty of people there this week, according to experts at SportsShoes.com.

They said: "Stretching along the coasts of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset, it’s England’s longest walking trail, but you can also enjoy its short walks that are just along a section of it."

They added the area is "known for dramatic sea views and quaint coastal villages", meaning there is plenty to explore.

Two parts of the Peak District made the list - Derwent Edge and Mam Tor - and Ben Lomond was the only Scottish walk in the top five.

Speaking of this, the experts continued: "Around an hour from Glasgow, it’s one of the more accessible Munros to get to and has impressive views of the highlands.

"It’s considered one of the easier Munros to climb, however it is still a mountain walk and requires relevant equipment and planning."

Hiking and trail expert at SportsShoes.com Ben Mounsey said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people getting outdoors and making the most of the UK’s stunning hiking trails, especially with the recent spell of warm, sunny weather.

"But with popular routes becoming increasingly busy over bank holidays, it’s important to be properly prepared."
