Most of the list was made up of coastal destinations in England

Fish and chips are a staple dish that many Britons enjoy on the beach during the summer months.

The chippy capital of the UK has been named in new research which analysed where there are the most fish and chip restaurants.

The north Yorkshire town of Scarborough was in the number one spot, with a total of 93 fish and chip shops - a huge 85.4 for every 100,000 people.

This comes as no surprise, according to Suomikasinot who conducted the research, as the village has "long drawn visitors with its harbour views, sandy beaches and love for proper fish and chips, with fresh North Sea catch on the doorstep".

Scarborough is the perfect place to pair your fish supper with beach views, and there are plenty to choose from. Visit Scarborough states: "Scarborough has some of the best beaches in the country, with the perfect castle-building sand.

"There is a mixture of soft sand and tidal hard sand. Scarborough is home to some stunning rock pools, where at low tide you can explore and maybe find crabs, fish and even lobsters."

Other popular seaside regions made the list, including East Lindsey and Blackpool. The highest ranking place outside of England was Gwynedd, promising a range of options for Wales.

In fact, only two spots on the list are not by the beach - Rossendale and Burnley. They can both be found in Lancashire.

Spokesperson for Suomikasinot, Markku Kanerva, said: “Fish and chip shops continue to be a cornerstone of community life throughout the UK, from Scarborough’s historic coastline to Blackpool’s busy promenade."

The expert added that traditional chip shops are facing "unprecedented challenges", however, and encouraged Britons to support their local branch.

Blackpool was number three on the list, and it is best known for the famous amusement park Pleasure Beach.

Holidaymakers have recently had a first look at an "exhilarating" new ride that is set to be the tallest in the UK and arrive at the park in 2026.

The 138-foot structure will become Britain's tallest pendulum ride when it opens, exceeding the current record holder. Drayton Manor's Maelstrom attraction, which stands at roughly 74 feet, will be overtaken by the new ride.
