An underrated Spanish beach has been named as a must-visit

Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Britons seeking sun, sand and relaxation.

The islands are often most popular with those booking a Spanish beach getaway, but it could be worth putting Barcelona on your radar this year.

While the Spanish town is a much-loved tourist spot, it is often considered for a city break rather than a beach holiday.

Speaking to GB News about his "top recommendation" for European beaches, travel and tourism expert Christian Petzold suggested Barceloneta Beach.

The expert explained: "It’s just over a two-hour flight from London, and from Barcelona-El Prat Airport, it takes about 20 minutes to reach the beach by taxi or public transport.

"What makes Barceloneta so special is its seamless blend of urban energy and seaside charm.

"You can start your morning with a swim in the Mediterranean, enjoy lunch at one of the beachfront 'chiringuitos' (beach bars) like La Deliciosa or Can Fisher, and then walk just 10 to 15 minutes to explore the Gothic Quarter or see Gaudí’s masterpieces."

The beach is within easy reach of the city and has plenty of bars and restaurants where you can relax. There are also lots of activities to keep you entertained.

Christian continued: "The beach is wide, clean, and lively, with volleyball courts, bike paths, and a scenic promenade that makes it perfect for both relaxation and people-watching.

"It’s especially attractive for business travellers attending conferences at the nearby CCIB or Fira Barcelona, offering the rare chance to go from a boardroom to the beach in minutes."

Barcelona is also a great base if looking to explore more parts of Spain, including the "beautiful and refined coastal town" Sitges, which is located a 40-minute train ride away.

The travel pro continued: "The town is reachable from the UK in under three hours total travel time, and what sets Sitges apart is its stunning stretch of 17 beaches, each with a different character.

"Platja de la Fragata, located near the iconic Church of Sant Bartomeu, is ideal for families and casual visitors, while Platja de l’Home Mort offers a more secluded, natural setting.

"The town itself is known for its whitewashed buildings, cobbled streets, and artistic heritage, as well as a vibrant dining and nightlife scene.

"For business events, Sitges also hosts several major festivals and corporate retreats, making it a fantastic destination that balances work and leisure perfectly."
