Sky has waived its usual set-up fee

  • Sky is still offering its lowest-ever prices on broadband
  • But these discounts must end at 11.59pm on December 4
  • Over 8 million Britons are out-of-contract
  • That means they can switch broadband firms immediately
  • There are no exit fees to worry about
  • Just sign up for the new deal, everything else is handled automatically
  • You can secure Sky Broadband 500Mbps for just £28 a month

If you're one of the estimated 8.8million nationwide currently out of contract, you could be missing the chance to save money on your broadband bill each month. When it comes to broadband, loyalty is never rewarded.

When you sign up for a broadband deal, you'll typically agree to stick with the same provider for a minimum contract term, usually 24 months. Most UK broadband providers increase your monthly costs each year, which means the longer you're with the same supplier, the more you'll be paying for the same service and speeds.

While you can't do anything about it during that initial contract term, you should move to a new deal — or provider — the moment that you're considered "out of contract" and able to switch without any exit fees.

According to research from Broadband Genie, the average Brit could save £183.60 by switching to a new deal.

And Black Friday is an incredible time to save on utilities, like broadband. Best of all, when your initial contract comes up for renewal in a couple of years, it will be Black Friday all over again, and you'll be able to secure another blockbuster deal from another supplier — so the savings continue!

Want one of the best broadband deals around this Black Friday?

Sky has slashed its full-fibre broadband prices to a record low. Both its Full-Fibre 500 and Full-Fibre 150 broadband packages have fallen to their lowest ever price points — making it the perfect time to switch.

Upgrade to fast 500Mbps broadband from Sky at the 'lowest-ever price'

Switch to Sky Broadband before 11.59pm on December 4 and secure the lowest-ever price for its Full-Fibre 500Mbps package. That's roughly 2x faster than the average household broadband speed in the UK, so you shouldn't need to worry about buffering when streaming your favourite shows or making video calls. Available in around 60% of UK homes, this speedy Sky package includes a minimum download speed. If missed, you can leave your broadband contract early with no early termination charges

Don't need those speeds? Sky Broadband 150 falls to 'lowest-ever' price too

If you want to enjoy the biggest saving on your monthly broadband bills, look no further than Sky Broadband's Full-Fibre 150 package. That's quite a bit slower than the 285Mbps average household broadband speed recorded nationwide by Ofcom, but given that you only need 5Mbps to stream your favourite Netflix show in 1080p HD... it should be plenty for quieter homes. Available in around 60% of UK homes, this speedy Sky package includes a minimum download speed. If missed, you can leave your broadband contract early with no early termination charges

Under One Touch Switch, ditching your slow broadband is easier than ever. Customers will only need to contact their new supplier to initiate the change. The new broadband firm will handle all aspects of the switch, including terminating the existing contract and organising the installation date for the new broadband supplier.

If that sounds familiar, it's because this seamless behind-the-scenes experience already exists... but only for those who move between brands that operate on Openreach cables, like BT, EE, Sky, TalkTalk, and Plusnet, to name just a few.

With the introduction of One Touch Switch process, Ofcom will insist those moving between full-fibre networks — like Virgin Media’s full-fibre network, which connects to roughly 16 million homes, to smaller operators like HyperOptic and Community Fibre, as well as BT-owned Openreach — enjoy the same experience.

Full Fibre 500 is available in 60% of UK homes. Sky relies on BT-owned Openreach to connect customers to its broadband. You'll need to live in an area that's been upgraded to the latest fibre infrastructure.

Openreach is currently ploughing ahead with an ambitious goal to upgrade 25 million premises to full-fibre broadband by December 2026. Earlier this year, the BT-owned firm revealed 17 million homes had been successfully upgraded to the speediest full-fibre internet connection. These next-generation connections offer download speeds up to 1,600Mbps.

Openreach works with over 650 individual service providers across its network, including Sky Broadband, BT, EE, TalkTalk, Plusnet, and many others. Since these brands all rely on the same underground cable running to your property, you can switch between these providers and access the same download speeds.

If you're unsure about what broadband speed you need in your home. We've put together the average download speeds for an hour-long television show episode in Standard Definition (SD), roughly 450MB in size.

  • 73Mbps, the average broadband speed in the UK: 54 seconds
  • 150Mbps, the lowest speed available with most full-fibre packages: 24 seconds
  • 500Mbps, widely available from all full-fibre providers: 7 seconds
  • 1Gbps (or 1,000Mbps) is not available from all broadband companies: 4 seconds
