The ability to highlight notes in colour is a game-changer

  • The Kindle Colorsoft is marked down to its lowest price ever
  • Amazon first announced the Kindle Colorsoft in October 2024
  • You can read all your favourite books, now illustrated in colour
  • Trade in your older model, and get an additional 20% off

I'm no stranger to speeding through a good book on an e-reader, especially while on holiday. Packing hundreds of thousands of titles on one compact device beats cramming two or three chunky books into an already stuffed suitcase.

And when it comes to e-readers, Amazon’s Kindle lineup always stands out for me. The sleek design, crisp display, and seamless access to countless books make it tough competition to beat.

Although for years, Amazon had only released its standard e-readers, such as the Paperwhite in black and white, meaning your favourite graphic novels, magazines, and other illustrated titles lacked colour display.

So, after the Kindle Colorsoft was officially announced in late 2024, I had a feeling it would rank high on my list.

But what really gives this particular model the big stamp of approval?

For starters, the Kindle Colorsoft models deliver all the features you've come to expect from Kindle, but enhanced with a colour e-ink screen. This means browsing book covers is much more vibrant than when you read from the standard Paperwhite. You can read graphic novels, magazines, and other illustrated content without missing some of the context normally illustrated with the use of colour.

The colourful e-reader features an adjustable warm light for comfortable reading at any point of the day, too.

For those who prefer dark mode, the Page Color feature inverts the traditional black text on a white background. Since my eyes are sensitive to brighter lights, I find myself consistently turning dark mode on the majority of my electronics — so this feature is especially beneficial.

These newer Kindle models also offer rapid page transitions, which has taken away the page-turning glitch many readers have reported seeing in older models.

If your morning commutes to the office are on the longer end or taking a long-haul flight, you won't have to worry about scouting out an outlet to charge your device. Like all other models, the battery can last for weeks instead of days. During a holiday, I've been able to forgo packing the extra charger altogether because I can count on my battery lasting for the full trip.

Plus, the Kindle Colorsoft has a waterproof design, so you can read worry-free at the hotel pool without the need for a case or worrying about damaging a traditional book. And if you drop the Kindle into the sand while reading on the beach (like I have), or accidentally spill a drink over this compact 7-inch e-reader, you can simply rinse it off worry-free.

What's especially great about the colour e-reader is that you can highlight passages in four different colours - yellow, orange, blue, and pink - and filter these annotations later for easy reference. This is especially helpful when attending book clubs or studying. You can organise your notes based on the various colour options.

The Kindle Colorsoft comes with 16GB or 32GB of storage. Both can hold thousands of books, so 16GB is usually enough for most readers. You can also bundle both with a three-month Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s subscription service that lets you read as many ebooks as you want from a vast library of over a million titles, plus select audiobooks and magazines—all for a monthly fee. It’s perfect if you're an avid reader who loves exploring new authors and genres without buying each book individually. Speaking from experience, I've discovered and read countless books I otherwise may not have picked up at my local bookstore.

How to trade in your older Kindle device

If you're looking to dip into even more savings, follow these steps to trade in your older device:

  1. Choose an eligible Kindle associated with your Amazon account or search for other device(s), even if bought elsewhere.
  2. Answer a few questions about the condition of your device(s) to receive a trade-in quote. Even non-working devices are eligible.
  3. Print a shipping label and send your device(s) for free - Amazon will verify the condition within 3 days after receipt.
  4. Once your trade-in is complete, an Amazon gift card equal to the appraised value of your old device(s), plus the 20% discount towards any new qualifying Kindle E-reader like the new Colorsoft, will be automatically applied to your account.
