Gamers in the US will see a $50 hike across all PlayStation 5 consoles

  • Sony announced a price hike for its PlayStation 5 in the US
  • Prices will increase $50 across all consoles
  • Controller and accessory prices will remain unchanged
  • The UK will not be impacted by this recent price increase

PlayStation 5 prices are surging, but costs remain unchanged in the UK (for now).

Unfortunately for those in the United States, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will rise from $450 to $500, the PlayStation with a disc drive will increase from $500 to $550, and the PlayStation 5 Pro will go up from $700 to $750.

Wireless controllers and accessories will remain the same for now.

A spokesperson for Sony wrote in a blog post, "Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21."

While it wasn't explicitly stated that the reason for the price shifts is due to the tariffs in the US, a portion of Sony's production is housed in Japan, where there are still hefty tariffs totalling 15%.

In an earnings call earlier this month, the company reportedly discussed that it's searching for ways to diversify its production to avoid future US tariffs. This isn't the first gaming device to experience price increases this year.

Microsoft raised prices of its Xbox consoles back in May, followed by Nintendo increasing the price of its original Switch console earlier this month.

While the UK isn't experiencing any price changes this time around, Sony did unexpectedly increase the price of its PS5 console in the UK, mainland Europe, New Zealand, and Australia this past April.

The price rise was due to a "challenging economic environment," according to a new blog post from Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment VP of Global Marketing.

It's worth noting that Sony now sells refurbished versions of its latest console, which is consistently the most affordable way to buy a PS5. These are limited to one per customer due to the demand. Sony offers the same 12-month hardware warranty on its refurbished consoles, which are serviced by the company itself. However, Sony warns that "Certified Refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections".
