No signal? O2 can now switch to a satellite

Mobile network O2 has flipped the switch on a satellite-powered signal boost, bringing coverage to the hardest-to-reach spots across the UK. By leveraging satellites in orbit, O2 is able to bring coverage to an area around two-thirds the size of Wales, increasing its overall coverage from 89% to 95% of the UK overnight.
O2 is the first UK mobile network to launch satellite-powered mobile data.
If you have an O2 SIM card tucked inside your smartphone and find yourself in the 11% of the UK landmass not covered by traditional network masts, O2 will automatically connect you via satellite. Since the new service kicks in automatically when you lose traditional cellular coverage, there's no need to download an app or change settings.
At launch, you'll be able to send text messages and use mobile data across popular apps, like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Google Maps, with more apps and capabilities set to follow soon.

Discussing the launch, Virgin Media O2 Chief Executive, Lutz Schüler said: “This is a huge step forward for mobile connectivity in the UK. O2 Satellite means our customers can stay connected in places where phones have never worked before, giving them reassurance whether they are exploring the countryside, travelling along the coast or simply moving beyond traditional coverage."
For now, the first-of-its-kind service is limited to the latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones, like the newly-announced Galaxy S26, S26+, and Galaxy S26 Ultra, with more devices due to be onboarded soon. If you're nervous about travelling through rural areas, sailing along the coast, or cycling and hiking in remote parts of the country where phones have previously shown no signal, O2 Satellite should definitely reassure you ahead of future trips.
If you want to access O2 Satellite, you'll need to pay £3 per month. You can add this perk via the Bolt On options for O2 Pay Monthly customers. If you're on one of O2's Ultimate Plans, then you'll enjoy the supercharged satellite-powered mobile data at no extra cost.
