Gamers, you're witnessing history unfold as the Nintendo Switch 2 stock has shattered a long-standing American sales record. The hybrid console sold a total of 1.6 million units during its June 2025 debut month, surpassing the Sony PlayStation 4's previous benchmark of 1.1 million units from November 2013.
This achievement marks the Switch 2 as the fastest-selling gaming hardware in US history, according to market research firm Circana. The console's remarkable performance has ended Sony's 12-year reign at the top of launch-month sales figures.
The Switch 2 dominated June's charts in both the number of consoles sold and revenue generated, though the PlayStation 5 maintains its position as 2025's best-selling console overall.
June 2025 has also become the most lucrative sixth month ever recorded for American gaming. Revenue soared to $978 million, demolishing the previous June peak of $608 million established in 2008.
The release of the Switch 2 pushed total gaming spending to $5.7 billion in June, up 22% from the same month in 2024. Console games made up 19% of this growth, with spending on video game content rising 6% to $4.4 billion.

The Nintendo Switch series is designed and sold as a handheld/home console, meaning you can either set it up to play on a TV screen or on its own as a portable device.
This contrasts with the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X, which are primarily designed for home console gaming.
While PlayStation does offer a portable remote player feature, it requires a Wi-Fi connection and is not a standalone console.
If you haven't played games on the Nintendo Switch 2 yet, the new console is designed to play games on an even larger screen compared to its prior model. The Switch 2 dock, used to connect the console to a TV, now supports 4K video resolution and 120 frames per second frame rate. It also supports HDR and frame rates up to 120 fps, meaning you can enjoy vibrant colour, clarity, and smoother gameplay.
The detachable Joy-Con controllers have been updated and now magnetically attach to the Switch 2 console. In addition, either Joy-Con 2 controller can be operated like a computer mouse by sliding it on a surface.
In addition, the kickstand built into the back of the Switch 2 is now fully adjustable for the first time, and the console will include a second USB-C port, which can be used for charging or to attach an accessory, such as the new Switch 2 Camera, which is used for social gaming with friends.
Elsewhere, Nintendo say the Switch 2 has significantly improved gaming performance, as well as eight times the storage capacity of the original Switch, with 256GB of built-in storage. The gaming giant also confirmed that several original Switch games will be compatible with the Switch 2.

There are a slew of games that are compatible to play on the Switch 2, and there are also a few exclusively made for the console.
Mario Kart World, for instance, is among a few of the exclusive games, and it achieved an 82% purchase rate amongst Switch 2 owners. As a result, the racing title grew its popularity as June's third-best-selling game behind Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Elden Ring: Nightreign.
