Nintendo has confirmed its next Nintendo Direct keynote will be broadcast on September 12, and Switch 2 console owners could be in for a serious treat.
If you're not familiar, Nintendo Direct is an online presentation produced by the Japanese gaming firm where it unveils new hardware, upcoming games, and changes to its Nintendo Online service. But what makes this latest Nintendo Direct so exciting is that it'll be hosted just 24 hours before the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros.' franchise — the series that launched Nintendo's moustachioed mascot.
As you'd expect, rumours are swirling that we could see a special announcement to mark the milestone.
Excited? You can stream the Nintendo Direct from September 12 on Nintendo's official YouTube channel or the official Nintendo Direct website. Tune in during the following start times based on your location:
- 2:00pm BST

What really adds credibility to rumours that we'll see something special around Super Mario or the original Super Mario Bros. games on this anniversary is that this wouldn't be the first time Nintendo has paid tribute to the beloved franchise, either. For instance, to mark Super Mario Bros.' 35th anniversary, it released Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Nintendo Switch. So, it wouldn't be out of the ballpark if you were to expect a similar unveiling.
Never played any of these games?
Super Mario Bros. is Nintendo’s iconic platforming franchise, first launched in 1985. It stars Mario and his brother Luigi on adventures to rescue Princess Peach from dinosaur Bowser, it has become one of the best-selling and most influential video game series of all time.
It has spawned games, television series, Hollywood movies, and most recently, theme parks.
In terms of other Mario-related announcements, many are anticipating the release of a brand-new 3D Mario platformer. Since the recent release of the new Nintendo Switch 2 console back in June, there hasn't been any news about an exclusive 3D Super Mario platformer.
