UK follows in the footsteps of the USA and India to access Google's new AI Mode

  • Google AI Mode is rolling out across UK now
  • It's designed to streamline research and save time
  • You'll need to sign in to a Google Account to access
  • Google AI Mode is only available in English

Your next Google search could look completely different, as the technology firm introduces its new AI Mode to the UK. This groundbreaking feature lets you ask intricate, multi-faceted queries that would've traditionally required a few separate searches to answer.

With AI Mode, you should be able to streamline the overall research process and save extra time. The rollout begins today across the UK, with full availability nationwide expected within the coming days.

Your questions can now stretch to double — or triple! — the length of conventional searches, according to Hema Budaraju, Google Vice President of Product Management for Search. She describes this as a "major shift" in online search behaviour. This allows you to ask more specific and detailed questions within the Google search box.

The feature, which Google calls its "most powerful AI search to date", arrives following successful launches in the United States in May and India earlier this month. You'll discover AI Mode appearing as a dedicated tab on search results pages and within the Google app on both Android and iOS.

AI Mode harnesses the capabilities of Gemini 2.5, which is Google's cutting-edge artificial intelligence designed to process your more complex queries. The system dissects your question into multiple components, then executes numerous searches simultaneously across various topics— saving you the time from having to do it yourself.

This sophisticated approach, which Google terms a "query fan-out technique", enables you to uncover content that might have remained hidden through conventional searching methods. The technology summarises findings from these parallel searches into cohesive, conversational responses.

Your interactions won't be limited to text alone either.

The new AI Mode system accommodates both voice commands and image uploads, so you can communicate naturally via whichever medium best suits your needs.

This is known as "multimodal", which means the Artificial Intelligence (AI) system can process information from multiple data types, including text, images, audio, and video, to create more comprehensive output. Since Google's new AI Mode supports this, you can photograph an object and ask follow-up questions out loud to further tailor the results you'll get.

According to Google, its new mode can be used to plan a weekend getaway or compare products before making a purchase. For instance, you might ask: "Things to do in Dublin this weekend with friends. We're big foodies who like music but also relaxed vibes and exploring all the local pubs."

Google says its new AI-powered feature works best when handling exploratory queries and complex tasks that previously demanded extensive research. For example, you could enquire about natural phenomena like "How do migrating birds know where to go?" and receive comprehensive explanations.

Budaraju emphasises that the tool enables you to "find information that was previously much harder to find". Whether you're organising holidays, evaluating different products, or mastering intricate tutorials, AI Mode streamlines these processes into single, conversational exchanges.

You can access AI Mode directly by visiting google.com/aimode or by selecting the new filter option positioned alongside existing search categories, like Images, Shopping, etc.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Google acknowledges that this early-stage technology requires ongoing refinement. "We won't always get it right, but we are committed to continuous improvement," Budaraju stated. When the system lacks confidence in its response, you'll receive traditional web search results instead.

The feature currently operates exclusively in English and requires users to sign into their Google accounts with Web & App Activity enabled in the settings. This UK launch represents the third international deployment of AI Mode, signalling Google's measured approach to global expansion.
