If you're looking to save money on a new streaming dongle, there's no competition

Want to upgrade your next binge-watch?

Amazon’s first major sale of the year is underway, with Black Friday-like price cuts across almost every department on the website. Several of the biggest streaming devices have enjoyed generous price cuts — but there’s no competition for those trying to decide between Roku, Google, and Fire TV.

All three of these gadgets offer streaming in 4K Ultra HD picture quality, which boasts 4x as many pixels as standard 1080p High Definition (HD), with support for HDR too.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K has enjoyed a 44% discount in the sale, dropping the price from £89.99 down to £49.99. That might seem like a good deal, but that’s £20 more expensive than the lowest price this HDMI dongle has sold for on Amazon.

In fact, the average price over the last two years on Amazon for this particular Roku model was £45.53 — that’s £4.46 less than you’ll pay right now in the Spring Deal Days sale.

Needless to say, that’s why this streamer didn’t make the cut in our pick of the best deals in Amazon’s Spring Deal Days sales event. And sadly, things aren’t much better for Chromecast fans.

Chromecast with Google TV 4K, the latest generation of the streaming dongle, which matches the Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K for picture quality, has only been discounted by a measly 3% in the sale. That brings the price down from £59.99 to just £57.95.

Those looking to improve their streaming set-up should turn to the Fire TV Stick range from Amazon.

The all-new Fire TV Stick 4K has plummeted from £59.99 to £34.99 in the Spring Deals Day sale. This latest generation of Fire TV Stick only launched in the second half of last year, so it’s unexpected to see such a steep price cut so early into its lifecycle.

With the latest refresh, Amazon upgraded its HDMI dongle with a 1.7 GHz processor, which provides roughly 25% more power than the original Fire TV Stick 4K. It also now supports Wi-Fi 6 for better wireless internet and Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10+ picture standards.

The Fire TV 4K Stick is on sale at an all-time low price, matching previous Black Friday discounts for this clever streaming hardware.

If you haven’t used one of these devices before, it plugs into any HDMI port and brings dozens of popular catch-up and streaming services, like Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, Paramount+, NOW TV, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and of course, Netflix. There's also game-streaming via an Amazon Luna subscription, video call support with Zoom, social media applications, and much more in the Amazon Appstore.

Alexa is built into the remote, so you can ask the chatty AI to control playback, launch apps, and search for new shows and films starring your favourite actors. The virtual assistant can do everything an Amazon Echo can do too, including controlling smart lights, adjusting thermostats, and checking video doorbells.

Amazon’s Spring Deals Day sale ends at 11.59pm on March 25, 2024.
