Both watches run watchOS 26

Apple has unveiled its latest smartwatches, bringing significant improvements to both the premium Series 11 and the more affordable SE 3 models. This is on top of Apple's other major announcements, including the iPhone 17, the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, and the AirPods Pro 3.

While the SE 3's upgrades make premium features accessible at a lower price point, Apple says the Series 11 "pushes the boundaries" of what's possible in a wearable device.

Both watches run watchOS 26, bringing new watch faces including "Flow" with liquid glass-style numerals and "Exactograph," a modern take on traditional clock designs.

The Series 11 features a major upgrade in durability. Apple has introduced "Ionex glass" - their strongest glass yet - combined with a special ceramic coating that bonds to the glass at the atomic level. This makes the watch twice as scratch-resistant as before, meaning it can better handle daily bumps, scrapes, and active lifestyles without showing wear.

For the first time, Apple Watch gets 5G cellular connectivity. This means faster internet speeds and better coverage when you're away from your phone. The new 5G system is also more power-efficient, using less battery while providing better performance. Major carriers will support this feature at launch.

In terms of health, Apple Watch can now detect high blood pressure (hypertension). Using the built-in heart sensor, the watch analyses how your blood vessels respond to heartbeats over 30-day periods. If it spots patterns suggesting high blood pressure, it will alert you.

This is significant because high blood pressure affects 1.3 billion people worldwide and often has no obvious symptoms - earning it the nickname "silent killer." Apple expects to notify over one million people with undiagnosed hypertension in the first year alone. The feature will be available in 150 countries after regulatory approval.

The new Sleep Score feature gives you a detailed analysis of your sleep quality. It looks at factors like:

  • How long you slept
  • Whether you went to bed at consistent times
  • How often you woke up during the night
  • Time spent in different sleep stages

Based on these factors, you get a score and specific suggestions for improving your sleep. The feature was developed using data from 5 million nights of sleep and guidance from sleep experts worldwide.

The Series 11 now offers 24-hour battery life, allowing you to wear it all day and all night to track sleep and health metrics continuously.

The watch comes in Jet Black, Silver, Rose Gold, and a new Space Grey, all made from 100% recycled aluminium. Premium titanium options are available in Natural, Gold, and Slate colours, also made from recycled materials.

The Apple Watch SE 3 brings many high-end features to Apple's more affordable watch line.

For the first time, the SE gets an always-on display, meaning you can see the time and watch face without raising your wrist or tapping the screen.

The SE 3 also includes Apple's S10 chip - their most powerful watch processor - enabling new features that weren't possible before.

You can now control the watch with simple handle gestures like double-tap and wrist flick, making it easier to use when your other hand is busy.

Like the Series 11, the SE 3 adds several new health features:

  • Wrist temperature sensing for women's health tracking and general health monitoring
  • Sleep apnea notifications to detect potential breathing problems during sleep
  • Sleep Score (same as Series 11) for detailed sleep quality analysis

The SE 3 now supports fast charging, charging up to twice as fast as the previous model. Just 15 minutes of charging provides up to 8 hours of use.

You can now play music or podcasts directly through the watch's speaker when you don't have AirPods available.

With 5G connectivity, improved health monitoring, better battery life, and enhanced durability, Apple's latest watches represent several new features in wearable technology, making advanced health tracking and connectivity features available to a broader range of users.

The Apple Watch Series 11 starts at £399, whereas the Apple Watch SE 3 starts at just £219. They're available for pre-order today, but they'll officially be available in stores beginning Friday, September 19.
