Monaco enjoys upgraded visuals and new F1 experiences within Apple Maps ahead of the Grand Prix

Apple has turbocharged its map of the city-state of Monaco ahead of the Grand Prix.

Starting today, the Apple Maps update will leave the pit stop and race onto devices worldwide. This refreshed experience offers new, detailed models of Monaco's most iconic buildings, as well as a slew of custom Formula 1 Grand Prix updates to make navigating the city on May 23-25 much easier.

There's no need to update your Apple Maps app — everything will appear automatically on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

First up, Apple Maps' Detailed City Experiences, which is already available in cities like San Francisco, New York, London, and Paris, timed to coincide with the Olympic Games last summer, has arrived in Monaco.

Designers at Apple have pored over every corner of the Principality of Monaco, adding extra detail to road markings, land cover, trees, and public transport routes. The team has also custom-designed 3D models of local landmarks, including Casino de Monte-Carlo, Fairmont Monte Carlo, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Yacht Club de Monaco, and the F1 Paddock Club.

When using Apple Maps in Dark Mode, light sources appear within the buildings to recreate the evening cityscape within the app.

If you want to take in every detail of this detailed recreation of Monaco's sights, the area supports Apple Maps' clever Flyover feature, which starts a virtual helicopter tour around many of the world’s major landmarks and cities.

And that's not all. In time for the upcoming Grand Prix de Monaco, Apple Maps has added a new way for attendees and F1 fans alike to explore and enjoy the race in-depth. The racetrack will be highlighted in Maps, and includes details like markers for each of the circuit’s iconic turns, along with 3D representations of grandstands, footbridges, the finish line, and more.

Apple Maps will also share advisories like road closures to help attendees get around as seamlessly as possible.

Discussing the new update, Eddy Cue, Apple Senior Vice President Of Services, said: "Apple Maps is the best way to navigate and explore the world, so we’re excited to bring this amazing experience to F1 fans and attendees of the Grand Prix de Monaco.

"Whether fans are there in person or watching from afar, the beautifully designed Detailed City Experience and Monaco Grand Prix features give them an incredible view into Monaco, just in time for the race and the upcoming premiere of F1 The Movie."

Ahead of the release of F1: The Movie — the hotly-anticipated blockbuster from the director of Top Gun: Maverick, starring Brad Pitt — Apple Maps has added a custom Guide featuring the world’s most iconic F1 racetracks, including Monaco and other tracks featured in the film.

Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team that is on the verge of collapse.

Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him, and he finds that in Formula 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition.

F1: The Movie is set to be truly immersive, and Apple is taking that one step further, enabling fans to dive into both Monaco and the film locations through Apple Maps,” said Ian Holmes, Chief Media Rights and Broadcasting Officer at Formula 1.

"They’ll be able to navigate the principality during the iconic Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco 2025 and hunt down key landmarks in Monaco and the race, to truly feel part of the action ahead of the film’s launch at the end of June."

F1: The Movie is scheduled to release in cinemas worldwide on June 25, 2025.
