Kamila Sellier has fortunately returned to Poland following the incident in Italy

Polish speed skater Kamila Sellier has arrived back in her hometown of Elblag following a terrifying incident at the Winter Olympics that left her requiring surgery.

The 25-year-old athlete suffered one of the most alarming accidents in the sport's history when a competitor's skate blade struck her face during last week's competition.

Sellier announced her return on Instagram with a simple post captioned "home", sharing images of herself holding three large bouquets of flowers alongside her dog.

Since the frightening collision, the skater has consistently concealed half of her face in all photographs shared on social media.

The incident occurred during the women's 1,500 metre short-track quarter-finals, when the blade made contact dangerously close to her eye.

Sellier was left covered in blood on the ice and required immediate medical attention following the collision.

The severity of the wound necessitated hospital treatment, with doctors determining that surgery was essential.

American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold was responsible for the collision that caused Sellier's injuries.

Officials penalised Santos-Griswold for executing an illegal lane pass during the race, a decision that prevented her from advancing to the semi-finals.

CT scan results revealed a minor fracture, prompting medical staff to perform surgery to reopen the wound for a thorough examination of the bone's condition.

Polish press attaché Katarzyna Kochaniak-Roman provided an update following the procedure, stating: "After the procedure, Kamila will remain in the hospital overnight for observation."

Kochaniak-Roman praised the athlete's resilience, saying: "She's very brave. She got out of bed on her own.

"Her parents and the national team doctor have been with her the entire time."

The skater remained under medical supervision with her family present throughout her hospital stay before being cleared to travel back to Poland.

In her recent Instagram posts, Sellier has carefully kept her injury hidden from view, with flowers obscuring half her face in one image and her phone blocking most of her features in a mirror selfie taken alongside her husband Diane and another dog.

Two days after the accident, the skater shared an emotional message with her followers, writing: "I know that one day I'll look at this picture and remember that I'm stronger than I ever believed."

She added: "thank you for all your words of support, just wanted to let you know that i'm doing quite okay."
