Alcaraz eventually rallied to a five-set victory 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 2-6 6-1, in a match spectated by legends such as Sir David Beckham and Sir Gareth Southgate.
After the thrilling victory, the two-time Wimbledon champion addressed whether the roof should close on Centre Court with the temperatures so extreme.
He explained: “Well, because of the sun, of the heat, I think it shouldn't close the roof because we are playing in an outdoor tournament. So the roof is just because if we can't play in another way.

"I think battling the heat, I think is one of the things that we have to do. Probably the match can't be in another way, because of the heat.
“I think we have to deal with it in the best way possible."
The Spaniard continued: "Obviously, for the fans, and even here in London, they are not used to having this weather. Sitting five hours in the stand without moving, the sun hitting, I think could be really difficult to deal with for the spectators.

Wimbledon had endured its hottest opening day on record yesterday, leading to precautionary measures needed for both players and spectators.
Temperatures soared to 31.4C by 2pm, smashing the previous record of 29.3C set in 2001 at the SW19.
Earlier in the day, Wimbledon CEO Sally Boulton had advised fans to take serious precautions amid the searing 31C heat.
"For the guests that will be joining us, we're offering the same advice, as lots of the medical professionals, you know, come prepared, bring a hat, wear sunscreen, wear light clothing, if you can, take breaks out of the sun," she said.
"We've got over 100 water points around the ground, so definitely stay hydrated, and keep an eye on your friends and others around you, people look like they're suffering a little bit from heat stress.”
Alcaraz faces young Briton Oliver Tarvet in the next round on Wednesday morning, whereas British number one Jack Draper is in action on Court One on Tuesday evening.
