Fans made their feelings clear with major tournaments around the corner

Tennis fans have expressed their dismay after learning that Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will no longer be working together.

It was announced that Murray, 37, would become Djokovic’s coach for the Australian Open at the start of the year, where the Serb progressed to the semi-final before withdrawing through injury.

Fans have taken to X to have their say on the decision, and many have made the same complaint as Wimbledon, where the pair famously battled it out in 2013, is set to commence next month.

One fan wrote: “Thought it would last until Wimbledon at least.”

A second said: “You were meant to be together until Wimbledon.”

A third fan commented: “Should have kept it going until Wimbledon”, while another claimed they ‘expected until Wimbledon’.

A fifth said: “I was hoping this would last until Wimbledon.”

The response came underneath Djokovic’s confirmation on social media that the decision had been made, saying: “Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun & support over last six months on & off the court.

“I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together.”

After appointing Murray as his coach at the start of the year, Djokovic has failed to win any silverware.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was forced to retire in the Australian Open semi-final, following it up with back-to-back defeats in Doha and the Paribas Open.

The 37-year-old made it to the final of the Miami Open, losing to Jakub Mensik.

He then suffered back-to-back defeats again, this time in the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open, leading fans to claim the ‘results on the court weren’t there’ under the mentorship of Murray.

The Scot reacted to the split, saying: "Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together, and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months.

"I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season."

Murray only retired from tennis last year.

However, fans are disappointed that Djokovic and Murray won't be together for Wimbledon, the tournament where the Briton previously beat the Serb to become the first man these shores to lift the championship since Fred Perry in 1936.

The reaction online was mixed, with some fans calling the partnership ‘weak’ and that it was the ‘right decision’.

Nevertheless, Djokovic will be searching for a new coach with major tournaments fast approaching.

Djokovic is also looking to become the oldest player to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

He is level with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who have all won their last major at the age of 36.

Djokovic, who turns 38 later this month, will want to surpass both of his long-term rivals, as well as the record held by Ken Rosewall, who previously won the Australian Open at 37.
