Tennis icon Roger Federer has entered an elite sporting fraternity, achieving billionaire status with an estimated net worth of $1.3billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Swiss maestro joins basketball legend Michael Jordan, valued at $3.5bn, and golf champion Tiger Woods at $1.36 bn as the only athletes to surpass the billion-dollar threshold.


Sources close to Federer revealed to Bloomberg that his wealth "exceeds $1b significantly".

The publication's calculations incorporate Federer's professional earnings, investment portfolio and endorsement agreements, with adjustments made for Swiss taxation rates and market performance over his 24-year career.

Federer's extraordinary wealth has been accumulated primarily through lucrative sponsorship agreements secured throughout his playing career and he's now the first tennis billionaire in history.

His long-standing partnerships include deals with Credit Suisse, which has since become UBS Group AG, luxury watchmaker Rolex, and Swiss chocolate manufacturer Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprungli AG.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has also established a comprehensive business infrastructure through Team8, the management company he co-founded with agent Tony Godsick in 2013.

Additionally, Format A AG manages his various investments and charitable foundation.

His most profitable venture emerged from an unexpected source - his wife's purchase of trainers from Swiss athletic brand On, which prompted an investment now valued at a minimum of $500million.

The investment in On has proved remarkably astute, with the company now commanding a market valuation of nearly $17bn.

Founded in 2010, the Swiss athletic brand distinguished itself through premium running shoes featuring an innovative sole design.

Co-founder Olivier Bernhard created the prototype using garden hose offcuts, developing the distinctive cushioning system that would become On's signature.

Switzerland traditionally lacked major sports brands, making On's rapid ascent particularly notable. The company has successfully positioned itself in the premium athletic footwear market.

Federer's stake in the company, sparked by his wife's initial purchase, represents his most lucrative business venture outside tennis sponsorships.

The 43-year-old's commercial appeal has been enhanced by his impeccable reputation throughout his career.

"Federer is totally scandal free. He never says the wrong thing," sports analyst Bob Dorfman told the publication.

His on-court achievements provided the foundation for his business success. The Swiss player competed on the ATP Tour for more than two decades, capturing 20 Grand Slam titles during his career.

He dominated men's tennis throughout the 2000s, winning 16 of his major championships between 2003 and 2010. For several years, Federer held the record for the most Grand Slam titles in men's tennis history.
