Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera was shockingly headbutted by an opponent while playing for FC Cincinnati.

The 22-year-old became entangled with Sporting Kansas City striker Alan Pulido, with tempers then boiling over.

Both players were tussling for the ball at the time but that's when Pulido then overstepped the mark.

The forward headbutted Mosquera, launching his body at his opponent with players from both teams then intervening.

Pulido received a straight red card for the incident and can have no complaints given the severity of the act of violence.

Mosquera was defended by team-mate Alvas Powell, as well as Cincinnati captain Luciano Acosta.

Acosta had strong words for Pulido, with referee Daniel Quintero Huitron quick on the scene before brandishing his red card.

Kansas were then left with 10 men for the final 60 minutes of the contest.

And they instantly felt the absence of Pulido, with goalkeeper John Pulskamp scoring an own goal to put Cincinnati ahead.

The match ended 3-3, with penalties then left to decide the winner.

Cincinnati were able to win the shootout 4-2, gaining an extra point in their Leagues Cup group in the process.

Pulido will be missing for Sporting Kansas City when they face Guadalajara on August 1.

The striker previously moved between the two sides back in the summer transfer window of 2020.

Pulido has scored 26 goals from 57 matches in the time since, consequently establishing himself as one of the deadliest forwards in the MLS.

As for Mosquera, the 22-year-old started his career playing for Atletico Nacional.

He moved to Wolves in 2021 after impressing in his homeland of Colombia.

However, the centre-back is yet to make a single competitive appearance for Wolves and is currently out on loan.

Wolves ended up finishing 13th last season, having looked set for Premier League relegation at one point.
