Baroness Michelle Mone and her husband could be set to pocket a huge prize at the Welsh Grand National.

Baroness Michelle Mone is in with a strong chance of pocketing an extra £85,000 this Christmas with a racehorse she owns seen as the favourite to win the Welsh Grand National.

The embattled Conservative life peer has hit the headlines recently after admitting to having lied about her involvement in PPE contracts over the pandemic.

The owner of lingerie company Ultimo also revealed that she's holding around £60million profit from the deal.

And she's in line for another huge payday when the Welsh Grand National gets underway next week.

Barrowman Racing is the owner of Monbeg Genius, who is the early bookies' favourite to win the huge festive race on December 27.

Baroness Mone revealed back in 2020 that the horse was a second wedding gift for her billionaire husband, Doug Barrowman.

Sports betting company OLBG have Monbeg Genius as the 6/1 favourite to take home the £85,425 cash prize.

An OLBG spokesperson said: “Monbeg Genius, owned by Barrowman Racing - after her husband, Doug - is the 6/1 favourite to win the Welsh Grand National on the 27th and take home the £85,000 prize on offer, which could set up a shot at the £500,000 Grand National in April if the horse finds the fast lane.”

The horse has already grabbed the headlines with five wins from just 11 races, including a strong showing at the Cheltenham Festival this year.

The Jonjo O'Neill-trained horse finished third in the Ultima Handicap Chase, taking home £13,262.

A good showing at Chepstow next week could see Monbeg Genius line up for the Grand National at Aintree in April.

Monbeg Genius is already an early joint-favourite at 14/1 to win the 2024 Grand National, alongside this year's winner Corach Rambler and Gaillard Du Mesnil.

The prize fund for the Grand National was set at £1m back in 2014 with the winner taking home a £561,300 cut.

Second-place will bank just over £200,000 while third takes home £105,500.

But that still falls short of some of the most lucrative horse races in the world with the illustrious Saudi Cup boasting a prize fund worth $30.5m.
