Norman's Cay has died following a fatal injury during Ladies Day at Epsom Downs

A two-year-old racehorse has died following a fatal injury sustained during Ladies Day at Epsom Downs.

Norman's Cay was euthanised after veterinary assessment concluded it was the best course of action for the horse's welfare.

The incident occurred during the Woodcote Stakes on Friday, when the horse suffered an injury in the closing stages of the race.

Norman's Cay was pulled up by jockey David Egan before being transported to the racecourse stables.

The horse, owned by AMO Racing, was competing in only his second race of the year after previously winning the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster.

The race was won by Maximized, who defeated Havana Hurricane by a length and a half.

Norman's Cay sustained his injury towards the end of the contest and was pulled up in the closing stages.

The two-year-old was able to walk into a horse ambulance following the incident. He was subsequently taken to the stables for further veterinary assessment.

Meanwhile, the main event of Ladies Day saw Minnie Hauk claim victory in the Oaks.

The winner finished ahead of stablemate Whirl in a one-two result for Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The veterinary team determined that the serious nature of Norman's Cay's injury meant euthanasia was necessary.

ITV Racing confirmed the decision in an official statement.

"Norman's Cay was taken back to the racecourse stables for further assessment by Epsom racecourse's expert veterinary team after sustaining an injury in the closing stages of the race," the statement read.

"In their assessment, it was concluded that the best course of action for the horse's welfare was to be humanely euthanised. Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections."

The veterinary team's assessment concluded that the injury was fatal, making the difficult decision unavoidable.

Norman's Cay was owned by AMO Racing, led by football agent Kia Joorabchian.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

The horse had shown promise early in his career, having won his previous outing at Doncaster by a nose.

AMO Racing analyst Charlie Sutton paid tribute on social media, writing: "Very sad to lose Norman's Cay at Epsom today.

"He was very well cared for at Richard Hannon's during his short career and again by the vets at the track. Can talk about what a nice horse he could've been for the team but ability is irrelevant in these circumstances really."
