The Red Devils exited the Carabao Cup after a dire performance on Wednesday night

Former Premier League star Didi Hamann thinks Manchester United would be wise to go for Julian Nagelsmann at a time when Erik ten Hag is under pressure.

The Dutchman seems to be a dead man walking at Old Trafford following his side's awful 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday night.

United have now lost eight of their first 15 matches so far this season.

And some fans are calling for Ten Hag to go as a result of their latest humbling.

Nagelsmann was recently appointed as Germany manager - but hasn't stopped the 36-year-old from being talked up as a potential Ten Hag replacement.

And Hamann, speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds, thinks he'd be a top appointment.

However, the former Manchester City and Liverpool star is also unsure whether Nagelsmann would want the job at Old Trafford.

"I think the problem Man United might face is their team," he said.

"If it were up to me, I wouldn't know where to start!

"They need players in every area on the pitch. A few years ago, Ralf Ragnick said the same thing.

"It depends on who they get. I'm not sure if the top-class managers go to Manchester United because they know that it's a three or five-year job.

"I think it's impossible to win the league within three years, but those expectations will always be there if a new manager comes in and spends a few quid.

"The other question revolves around how much money the new manager gets.

"Nagelsmaan has done well and he did good things at Bayern.

"He's an up-and-coming manager who has shown he can win titles, even if was unfortunate in the Champions League.

"He'd certainly be somebody you'd have a good feeling about.

"He knows how to play football, but it depends if he was backed.

"You need to back your manager for two or three seasons, and I don't know if that's the case at Man United.

"There's a lot of chaos at Old Trafford. However, I don't think Julian would be a bad choice.

"You don't want to keep managers for the sake of it, but you need to at least give them a chance."

Right now, the party line is that Ten Hag's job at the club is safe.

But it's not unfeasible that stance will change in the foreseeable future with United well off the pace.

Even the matches they've won so far this season, a 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace aside, they've been fortunate.

Should Ten Hag lose his job, he'd become the fifth permanent boss to be hired and fired at Old Trafford.

David Moyes was the first, with the Scot lasting just 10 months after being given a six-year deal upon replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Louis van Gaal then came in and won the FA Cup - but was sacked just 24 hours after securing silverware.

United started well under Jose Mourinho, winning trophies such as the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League.

But they fell apart in 2018 and the Portuguese paid the price.

United thought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be the man to bring back the glory days when he was hired in the wake of Mourinho's sacking.

Yet he was relieved of his duties in 2021 after failing to get the best from his squad.
