Anderson said the American fencing association 'should be ashamed of themselves'

Lee Anderson has expressed his outrage at an American fencing competition, in which a trans athlete born biologically male was allowed to compete in, and ultimately win, the female division.

The controversial triumph comes a year after USA Fencing changed their policy on transgender and non-binary athletes.

This policy now reads: “USA Fencing will not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, regardless of sex assigned at birth, or any other form of gender expression for participation in any division.”

“As such, athletes will be permitted to participate in USA Fencing sanctioned events in a manner consistent with their gender identity/ expression, regardless of the gender associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.”

American swimmer Riley Gaines publicly criticised the victory, saying “Winning a title as a male in the women's category doesn't make you a champion. It makes you an entitled cheat.”

While speaking with Patrick Christys on Wednesday’s GB News Tonight, Anderson said of the association’s decision, “They should be ashamed of themselves.

“It's time for these sporting bodies to sort this out. In 30 years time we could end up with an Olympic Games or World Championships with no biological women there.”

Patrick agreed: “That is what we're going to end up with because ultimately it's going to come down to peak physical performance and in an athletic tournament, men are more athletic than women.”

“Things like ju-jitsu or MMA or boxing, that is a man beating a woman up on national television and I find that absolutely disgusting!”

Indeed, the British Ju-Jitsu Association has come under similar fire this week, after updating their own policy to allow biological men identifying as women to compete against biological women in the martial art - a move which has now been reversed.

Lee continued, “Imagine having a daughter, a young girl's training for a particular sport, maybe swimming or something like that from the age of four or five years old, puts the hours in, puts the shifts in for 10-12 years.

“And then, hey presto, 12 years later some bloke turns up in the dressing room, jumps in the pool with them and beats them by half the pool!”

Patrick also wondered whether unfairness is the only factor worth considering, saying “even the showers alone pose a danger.”

Lee agreed: “Well, this is the argument I have with people. You know, when they call me transphobic, I say no, it's not transphobic.

“You do not want a bloke turning up in a swimming changing room next to a young girl. You know, back in my day, they’d have been locked up for that.”

In response to backlash over the association’s decision, a spokesperson from USA Fencing said: “USA Fencing proudly stands with Liz Kocab and celebrates her continued success at the highest levels of fencing. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that respects all athletes, regardless of gender identity.”
