The heartwarming moment was a first for the 34-year-old

Tommy Fleetwood delivered a heartwarming moment at the DP World India Championship as he sealed his eighth European Tour title and finally gave his son Frankie the moment he had been waiting for.

After rolling in a seven-under-par final round of 65 to finish on 22 under at Delhi Golf Club, Fleetwood was embraced on the 18th green by his eight-year-old son, who had long dreamed of celebrating one of his father’s wins in person.

Fleetwood, 34, revealed that the thought of giving Frankie, that moment spurred him on throughout Sunday’s final round.

“That was all day today what I had in my mind — could I put myself in a position where I could actually make that happen?” he said. “It’s just one of those little things. It means so much to me and that was really cool... that’s what I wanted to do all day. I hope there are going to be many more times when we hopefully get the chance to do that.”

It was the first time Frankie had been present to see his father win, having missed Fleetwood’s maiden PGA Tour victory in August and been too young to attend his last DP World Tour triumph in January 2024.

The emotional embrace capped a day that saw the Englishman put on a clinical display of precision and composure to overturn a two-shot deficit and claim a two-stroke win.

Fleetwood began the final round in second place behind Japan’s Keita Nakajima, but a run of form through the middle of the round proved decisive.

After a slow start, he produced four straight birdies from the seventh to the tenth holes, then sank further birdie putts on the 14th and 17th to establish control.

New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier briefly leapt into the lead after moving to seven under for his round, but a costly double bogey on the 14th ended his challenge.

Nakajima, meanwhile, could not reproduce the fireworks of his third-round 65 and had to settle for his third runner-up finish on the DP World Tour.

Fleetwood’s victory extends an exceptional season that has already included eight top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and another standout performance in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph over the United States in New York.

Fleetwood’s victory extends an exceptional season that has already included eight top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and another standout performance in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph over the United States in New York. “There’s been plenty of times when things haven’t gone my way, but the last two tournaments I’ve been in contention in I’ve won, so maybe things are starting to even out a little bit,” he said.

The result also guarantees Fleetwood’s qualification for the season-ending events, capping another chapter in his quietly consistent year.

Fellow Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick birdied the 18th to card a third consecutive 67, finishing on 18 under and tied for third with Ireland’s Shane Lowry.

Viktor Hovland climbed to 17 under with a final flourish, chipping in for eagle at the last to claim a share of fourth. Rory McIlroy endured a subdued week by his own standards, closing in a tie for 25th on 11 under.
