Brooks Koepka will pay a huge fine to return to the PGA Tour

Brooks Koepka has officially secured his return to the PGA Tour following four seasons competing with LIV Golf, the organisation confirmed on Monday evening.

The 35-year-old five-time major champion expressed his gratitude in an emotional statement posted to social media.

"When I was a child, I always dreamed about competing on the @PGATOUR, and I am just as excited today to announce that I am returning to the PGA TOUR," Koepka wrote.

The American golfer cited family considerations as a key factor in his decision.

"Being closer to home and spending more time with my family makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me," he added.

Koepka's homecoming carries substantial financial consequences.

The golfer will pay a $5 million fine and surrender his eligibility for the PGA Tour's Player Equity Programme for five years.

According to PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp, this equity forfeiture represents "one of the largest financial repercussions in professional sports history."

Estimates suggest Koepka could forfeit between $50 million and $85 million in potential earnings, depending on his future performance and the Tour's growth trajectory.

Additional restrictions apply to his immediate playing opportunities.

The returning champion will be barred from receiving FedEx Cup bonus payments this season and cannot accept sponsor exemptions into signature events.

The PGA Tour has established a new Returning Member Programme specifically designed to facilitate the comeback of elite players who departed for LIV Golf.

Eligibility is strictly limited to just four golfers: Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cam Smith.

Each must have claimed victory at either the Players Championship, the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open or The Open Championship between 2022 and 2025.

A minimum absence of two years from Tour competition is also required.

Chief executive Rolapp confirmed that any other players wishing to follow Koepka's path must submit their reinstatement applications by 2nd February.

Koepka will make his competitive return at the Farmers Insurance Open, teeing off at Torrey Pines on 29th January.

He will subsequently compete at the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, a venue where he has triumphed twice previously.

His 2021 victory there, secured with a remarkable eagle chip on the 17th hole, marked his final PGA Tour win before departing for LIV Golf.

The American brings an impressive record back to the Tour, boasting nine career victories and long-term exemptions into the Masters, US Open and The Open Championship through 2028.

He also holds a lifetime exemption to the PGA Championship.
