The 63-year-old had been the longest-serving Premier League chairman prior to Thursday's shock announcement

The football world was left stunned on Thursday when Tottenham, seemingly out of the blue, announced the departure of chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy had ruled the roost at Spurs ever since his appointment back in March 2001, with the supremo helping the north London giants establish themselves as a 'top six' Premier League club.

Addressing his departure, Levy stated: “I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees.

"We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community.

"I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years.

"It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made.

"I will continue to support this club passionately.”

Tottenham have become a financial juggernaut over the past two decades or so.

Yet with the club winning just two trophies during Levy's tenure, patience had started to wear thin.

Many Tottenham fans protested against Levy and how he ran the club last season as results spiralled under Ange Postecoglou, who would ultimately lose his job despite May's Europa League triumph over Manchester United.

Ultimately, behind the scenes, Tottenham felt changes had to be made in order to achieve far more sporting success - rather than just commercial.

According to The Sun, the family of British billionaire Joe Lewis are calling the shots at Spurs.

His children, Vivienne and Charles, are 'calling the shots' at Tottenham these days through ENIC.

A source is quoted as saying: “Generations of the Lewis family support this special football club and they want what the fans want – more wins more often.

“This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach.

“In Vinai [Venkatesham], Thomas [Frank] and Peter Charrington, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era.”

For Levy, he leaves with his head held high.

He will be proud of the work he's done at Tottenham, who have come on leaps and bounds during his time as chairman.

Though the trophies didn't come often enough, Spurs were still able to secure two.

2008's Carabao Cup win over Chelsea remains a famous moment in their history, while May's victory over Manchester United in the Europa League was arguably Tottenham's biggest triumph of them all.

What's next for Levy remains to be seen.
